New Google Interface and Logo: screen caps and video
This might have been covered elsewhere, but we haven’t been able to find it if so – so apologies if this is old news to anyone. Majorly interesting stuff though regardless – read on!
A new Google logo and interface is on its way. Rory was looking through his referrer logs when he discovered an unusual number of visits from an IP address. Following it revealed that it was a Google datacentre. Nothing unusual there, but when he started searching using it? Well – check this out:
The first thing is the new logo – a subtle evolution from the traditional logo we know and love… a much subtler treatment of the drop shadow and a hint of gloss. Much tidier and more modern than the current logo. This seems to be a step on from the changes that surfaced for some people back in November last year but is more complete (and striking?)
Inside, there’s a host of new stuff – quite dramatic changes including a new sidebar treatment and a little feature called “this result is not unlike…” which lists related sites and/or searches. Here’s a video capture which highlights some of the most obvious new features. Click here for a video of the new Google homepage that highlights some of the most obvious changes – or watch the slighty blurry YouTube of the same below:
We’ve already got some thoughts on the impact of these changes – watch out for an update in full when we’ve had time to write them up. Enjoy!

It didn’t get noticed that much, but this was actually released aaaaages ago as a bit of JavaScript you could run. The new design takes a bit of getting used to – it looks a bit childish at first, but it grows on you.
Malcolm Coles had a really important note on how it can affect local search, definitely worth reading: http://www.malcolmcoles.co.uk/blog/googles-new-layout-local-seo/

It’s much more neat and professional looking.

Thanks for posting this. I, too, had some trouble finding an explanation of the changes. It will be interesting to see where this goes. However, I do agree with Dave’s comment that it looks a bit childish. That might not grow on me.

This has just become the default for me (only on chrome though)
I also saw it on chrome again a few weeks back, must be gradually rolling it out and testing.
Not decided on if i like or not yet!

I think what Dave said is probably true, it’s being gradually rolled out, and the person who discovered this just saw Google on one of the servers that has already been updated.
In regards to it being found with javascript, do you have a link?

YouTube redesign – now that’s messed-up big time.
