If you want to see the future (or, more depressingly, the present) of media circle jerking and thin content shills, you can do a lot worse than check out the ‘sexy mps’ website. Frankly, I’m not going to grace it with a link. The BBC breathlessly notes that the owner Francis Boulle, “the entrepreneur who’s appeared on reality show Made in Chelsea”, Tweeted out that everyone should “make this go viral” and duly obliged by making it a lead ‘news’ story on the BBC site.
All’s fair in the media bubble, you might say (and certainly kudos to Mr. Boulle) but the Beeb are shovelling clean link equity at this guy when he has pop-unders for a variety of casino and gambling sites, and when you’ve clicked your third choice of MPs you then get a choice of “which advert do you think is the sexiest?” and a choice of affiliate banners to click.
Some in depth journalism right there folks! There’s even a lead in which says the site has been “coming under criticism”, which has a mild rebuke from some blogger somewhere. Or to paraphrase things:
- Man who’s been on telly creates a quick-buck website
- Tweets about it
- Journalist at the nation’s leading broadcaster writes this up as a “story” – complete with the suggestion that it was already a story when he wrote about it
- Man laughs as the free traffic and money rolls in on the back of the attention
This is in no way a criticism of the guy himself: probably more jealousy that I didn’t think of it first, but without the whole “I’ve been on the telly” thing, you’ve got to figure that your bog standard vanilla affiliate bloke would never have got this kind of leg-up, and it’s interesting to note that the BBC are happy to link out to that kind of site
The lesson: you can still blag your way into the mainstream media – even with a thin content piece of crap!
On an unrelated note, it’s a shade under 2 years since I first popped up here and regretfully, I’ll be moving on to pastures new after today. So thanks to all those who read, commented on or tried to spam the various posts I’ve written since. I’ve met and talked to some great people through my time here and it’s been a brilliant couple of years. I reactivated my Twitter account (despite hating the damn thing) so maybe I’ll see you around
