I think it has something to do with the indexing guys using my site as the guinea pig for shifting sites around between www and non-www. They were whipping it back and forth like a hot potato. Honestly, I think at the end they were just having fun: “wax on. wax off. wax on. wax off.”
The real story should be this: remember when Greg & co. told everybody to link to the non-www form of my url to try to mess up my canonicalization? Yup, all those links are counting toward my PageRank, so it actually made my site stronger when everyone was trying to submarine me.

http://www.jlh-design.comSome datacenters were showing the non-www version as a 5 as well. So I’d imagine the visible toolbar PR snapshot was taken when his site was somewhere between all the link power going to the non-www from the www version, with some splitting between the two going on.
