Windows Media Centre users are addicted to porn

So I was watching the logs on Zippy (our meta search engine) today while MySQL was thinking about adding another column to a large database (which it’s still doing) and noticed an interesting statistic:

Most of our porn searches had UAs like this: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; .NET CLR 1.0.3705; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; Media Center PC 4.0

We mulled over this in the office for a while and came up with the following conclusions:

  1. Media Centre is a new technology, and when confronted with new toys, most people use them to look at porn
  2. Media Centre PCs are usually connected to 48″ Plasma TVs, or other generally large displays

So ladies, if your hubby’s trying to convince you to buy a new home entertainment centre, remember this: All he wants is to watch naked girlies in high-def.

And one other thing: Does anyone have any idea who the fuck NetForex is? Because for a financial search engine they seem to be caining our porn terms a helluva lot.

Nice find - Media Center PC is a whole other world! I love it! It’s a whole new environment to DL videos and enjoy them. Most sites in general don’t cater to the Media Center browser. Do you have sites that work well on the WMC when it’s displaying on a TV?

Did you contemplate writing your search urls with a dash:
    http://www.zippy.co.uk/search/wordone-wordtwo

    Instead of like this:
    http://www.zippy.co.uk/search/wordone%20wordtwo

    Do you think it matters?

As for WMC websites - I’m not convinced it’s worth the effort. I think a lot of MC PCs are connected to HDTV these days which negates the issue. As for the rest.. 640px is quite a restrictive size. In all honesty, any of our sites that work at 640px are happy accidents.

As for the search URLs - we don’t think it matters enough for the trouble that it would cause.

I’m using winxp media center edition on a laptop with 1440×900 res screen.
It’s basically winxp pro with some mods to it. The DVD player software is quite nice, but I can’t say I’ve used any of its other unique features, or really care to :)
