Ok I’m in a little pissy mood here, mainly because i don’t like making mistakes but this is fucked up..

TODAY I WAS CHECKING SOME LINKS THAT WE WERE BUYING .. after telling Dan off, ( bad purchase ) mainly because he trusted the source ! my recommendation ( note: tell self off later !)

Then I thought I hadn’t checked my links for a while, my recurring ones I mean, so I did a quick batch test of 33 sites.

results :

6 of the websites where PR0 or banned in google because those sites had signed up to PayPerPost grrr idiots!
2 Dead because the fucking Tech that the link company uses is erroring, and now showing google that those sites sells links !

text link

4 sites that the link broker said that they where running ad’s have been removed from the sites !!
1 nofollow had been added to the site
1 page deleted 404
1 domain been dropped and put on sedo style page !

Ouch! This is why you need a nice cron script checking your links are still up and running!

I’ve started link checking religiously, i’ve had issues in the past were sites have been sold and the new owner has failed to honour the previous owners paid links – that’s a right trick.

Hi Dan here….Ive recovered from dave’s tongue lashing ooo – but can tell you it wasn’t authoritydomains. However, I am now having to check all of the links we have purchased, meaning everything takes twice the amount of time Great! WTF do link specialists do?

I have custom software running that checks a percentage of my links nightly. Generally each link gets checked weekly. It checks for changes to sites I am linking out to, too. They expire and get picked up for ‘nefarious uses’ too regularly ;)

I am far too lazy to do it by hand when I could have fun writing some code to do it for me :)

I specced my last company to build a tool that checked all links were live with the correct anchor text and correct PR. Definately a useful tool cos it’s something you need to keep on top off especially at PR update time!

Hell never thought about creating a cron job tool that can do this. Is there a program already out there that does this? Shouldn’t be too hard to make I guess, I’ll add this into my “future tools that would kick ass but I don’t have time to make” list.

It’s a shame, and even more frustrating that it’s that also happens with free or exchanged links.

After spending hours researching quality links, and then submitting and chasing up – only to find the website no longer online or the webmaster has decided to redesign the site. It’s a constant battle.

Should link buyers/ sellers be signing contracts to protect the transactions?

That does illustrate one of the problems with paid links. And of coarse the fact that they may or may not actually be passing Page Rank…lol. The Arelis directory building software has a link checker for link exchanges.

Very interesting analysis… which happens to suck for you and probably many others out there too.

After you get everyone’s feedback and suggested tools, if you want to submit a story to our blog http://www.LinkBuildingBestPractices.com we would be happy to post it.

Lots of webmasters need to understand this side of link building. And of course, we’re happy to include whatever links you want in the post.
