What does SEO stand for?

06.11.08

Ok I know that it stands for Search Engine Optimisation, but when I’m asked by people not in the industry what is the best way to explain without my normal smart arse response…so when people say what does SEO stand for? what should I answer?

As a single lad who’s active on the local dating scene I suffer from not being able to explain my occupation on a regular basis. It usually goes like this…

    “so, what do you do?”
    “im an SEO”
    “a what?”
    “a search engine optimiser”
    “a what?”
“I f*ck about with peoples websites to make them better”
    “oh, like a web designer?”
    “erm, yeah that’ll do”

So for me SEO stands for “Solid (to) Explain Occupation”

Hahah, Matt, I have the same problem. That’s probably why second dates are a rare occurance for me.

Yep, that’ll be the reason. Definitely.

    Hi Dave,

Do what I do, not what I say ;) Your blog is a constant souce of hillarity and inspiration and it makes me laugh the ways you come up with things like this, which is why I keep reading. Must be a barrel of fun in your office on a Friday! Got any jobs going ;)

I gave up on trying to explain SEO to civilians… Now I just run with “publisher” or “online marketing consultant”. There are so many unskilled bogus SEO companies out there that it won’t be long before people start comparing us with loan sharks and used car sales dealers……

Id just like to point out that when i google my user name (i dont do it that often) I now get this post at number 5… with the description:

“As a single lad who’s active on the local dating scene I suffer from not being able to explain my occupation on …”

Not the coolest description in the world…
