Website for Sale

You are starting an online business venture and have heard that new sites lack authority and could take months before they see visitors, you don’t really have the budget for  ppc  or indeed SEO yet can afford an initial outlay on a website. You are not really concerned about how the website looks and have decided that page rank and a site that is already indexed are more important as of course is the age of the domain.

Where would you buy this site from ?  Who to trust ?

You know that there are domain auctions out there but are looking for an established website.

You can buy websites from SEDO or other websites like moniker, snapnames even from ebay.

But its still kinda tricky, you’d people inflating their PageRank or even buying tons of russian traffic just to inflate their stats and hoping in a bigger and better sale.

When i buy websites i tend to look for existing websites in Google. Websites that score on big keywords on page 2 or 3. With some effort you can bump those websites to page 1.

Just contact the website owners if they are willing to sell their domain name (and/or websites). It’s a lot more work than buying from nice big lists as SEDO, but now you have more control on what you buy.

PS. Always look if the website isn’t part of a large network, which after being bought is excluded from the network and drops in rankings.

Personally, I quite like using Sitepoint to buy websites, domains etc. However its always important to do some research.

If the domain is parked, probably not very established, although you get indexed quicker thats about it IMO.

You really need to invest some “time” not just money. You need to put yourself through an education process, via reading blog posts and forum discussions. Because, not only will you find good places to pick up sites that way, but, you will also discover what to watch out for.. because there are things people can fake (page rank) and things people can not (organic ranking for key phrases). Better still, and quicker, might just be to incorporate into your purchase cost some consulting from an old hand.

You buy them from the people who don’t know what they have and the poeple who don’t have their site listed for sale.

You can also look for sites and domains for sale on sites like WebsiteBroker.com that specialize in listings of established websites for sale. It is amazing how many opportunities are out there to pick up undervalued sites.

Urgh I wouldn’t piss on DP if it was on fire. I feel like it has become the home of cheap SEO and scammers. Well maybe it always was.

Sitepoint does seem to offer slightly better stuff, or maybe just less spammy stuff.

I have been looking into old websites and domains today actually. It doesn’t seem to be the easiest thing if you are just getting into it. I think I may try the recommendation Dave made for expired domains

Also the problem I find with buying websites is actually valuing it, though I guess this is why research is so important.

… and on change of ownership some of the factors you bought the site for - get reset to zero.

Much preferred to start with a new domain.

I have bought a couple of older domains from searching on sedo, domain aftermarket and afternic, never bought through them though, I just look at the whois data then contact them direct to cut out the commission charges.
