Tosser of the Week

Correct me if I’m Wrong here but i always thought that google only allowed 3 ad units + 1 text link unit..

so why today do I find a publisher well known to Google running 6 ad units ???

The guy was bragging at SES about the fact he is so close to making 1 million in adsense a year .. he also said that Google hand edit the serps so that his Blogs, all 80 of them, rank ~1 for his keyword terms BECAUSE HE IS SUCH A BIG PUBLISHER .. He also said that seo was dead yer tosser.. btw I have screen shot to prove it :P

DaveN

hell if i could run 6 ad units I could make a Million in adsense

I think you should either publish the screen shot or the 6 ad units. :)

I bet he’s got 500 other things on his mind today

Dave, I bet you that if you really wanted, you could find a way to get 7 units, and not be caught. But then, if you were running AdSense, they’d be able to track you….

Interesting post because my partner and I have been looking at a couple of his blogs and dissecting them for ad placement and the ones we saw had only 3 sets of Google ads - two of the traditional type and one set of text links.

    Stuart .. Look harder :)

I’m about to David - we only looked yesterday :)

Damn - you’re right - a rough count just now at the blog we looked at yesterday shows 5.

But hand fiddling the SERPS … hmmm he might have said it but I can’t see them doing that.

Selling their soul for one publisher? Hmmmm.

Thats why he is the Tosser of the Week :)

I can’t see Google doing that at all IMO.

Hey, I don’t like Jason Calacanis too - because he is a nasty person but you shouldn’t be so self-righteous! It is an issue between Calacanis/WeblogsInc and Google - it’s none of your business, pal!

Maybe you watch too much movies like Pulp Fiction and Sin City, but such issues are internal matter of 2 sides, me thinks. Yo!

  11. 11. DaveN | August 17th 2005 @ 1:16 pm

Maybe Russell Beattie not being invited by Tim O’Reilly to invite-only Foo Camp .. was between them.. and none of your business… but hey thats your blog and this is mine :)

Movies I love The Princess Bride, but if Pulp Fiction is like that I will watch it

it’s none of your business : I agree I’m just blogging on shit I find, Like you do …. isn’t that what bloggy peeps do :)

Maybe Jason’s just irritated he’s not such good mates with people at the top of Google. At least you seem to get away with your spammy activities.

  13. 13. DaveN | August 17th 2005 @ 1:47 pm

At least you seem to get away with your spammy activities… Believe me I don’t get any favours, they catch me they ban me … end of story.. yer I get to meet Sergey and Larry in the plex, but that was more accident than anything else ..

But Jason was saying in front of 500+ webmasters that google places his websites in the number 1 slot for his keyword terms BECAUSE HE IS SUCH A BIG PUBLISHER … well that’s just plain crazy … If google had done that, and i don’t think for one microsecond that they did.. I would not be biting that hand .. ever !!!

Well I suppose that Google could just ban his sites for a week or two just to prove they don’t need his lousy million a year - it’s not like Google would lose the money if he was gone - other publishers would pick up his adsense inventory… net loss for Google, zero.

If Jason just posted here or on his blog :

    a) Sorry he had said SEO was dead

    b) I don’t display 6 ad’s it’s 3 but I know why you saw 6 and I will sort it

    c) Google didn’t Hand edit the serps to make him number 1.

d)and something nice about YPN.. cause he was shitty at SES about them

I would leave this subject alone.. and move on :)

I didn’t quite believe it at first, so I viewed source on one of his recent entries, and found four Google ad units: the 728×90 at the top; the 300×250 below the post, the 468×60 below the comment form, and the 120×600 in the sidebar. It looks like a space had been reserved for a fifth ad unit, but it’s not in evidence in the source. I dunno where six came from. The homepage, however, has only three ad units.

Hey Dave I never realized how popular you are with the blogging crud. (err I mean crowd…)

Maybe if you have some time you can send me some pointers on how to get in good with the bloggers… ;-)

  18. 18. DaveN | August 17th 2005 @ 5:03 pm

lots0… dead easy first sign 2 million blogs with the terms online poker and viagra etc… let them all know it was you..

stop doing the spam bit, then in 6 months launch your own blog … less than 6 months they are still really pissed at you.. more than 6 they forget you :)

then once you have a few readers pick on a “content writing, cross linking, auto page generating, 6 ad units per page, kinda guy … sit back and wait for all the blog love :)

    1. I never said that Google gives us better placement because we run Google Adsense. This doesn’t make sense anyway, since we, in fact, don’t run Google Adsense on every page and we’re starting a Yahoo Publisher Network. I have no idea how Google indexes pages and we spend no time on SEO–ZERO! We just try to make the best, unfiltered content we can and we try to do it consistantly.

    2. In relation to the number of Google Adsense ads we are running on each page I can only say this “If you would like information on Google running on our sites please contact their press department.” I can assure you we are not violating any terms with them.

    best jason

I would rather just ask Tribal Fusion, but thats cool I will ask my adsense friends.

I have no idea how Google indexes pages : So why say that SEO is dead and google puts your sites #1 for keywords like treo 650 by hand because you’re such a big adsense publisher.

you also asked when google are going to release %’s like the YPN, which Will jumped straight in and said we don’t !!

I’m putting it down to you got a little excited, because it was the first time you had spoken at SES, and you actually forgot what you said..

Well, I associate SEO with gaming the system. I’ve sinced learned that there are some folks in SEO who are advocating doing exactly what we’re doing at Weblogs, Inc: creating world-class content early and often.

My view of SEO was a bunch of folks trying to game the system… I think those folks–let’s call them the “evil SEO” folks–are dead now that search companies are getting so good at kicking out spammers/linkblogs/etc.

  22. 22. DaveN | August 17th 2005 @ 8:26 pm

I think the term you are looking for is “black hat spammers”. SEO is used as a term for search engine optimisation as in optimising your website for search engines.

  23. 23. Duncan | August 18th 2005 @ 7:14 am

Cmon Dave, your best mates with the top guys at Google, why dont you drop in for another drink and ask them about Calcanis?

  24. 24. Rob | August 18th 2005 @ 9:18 am

You think blackhat SEO is dead because the SEs are getting too good? Ha! That’s a tickler.

  25. 25. Cellounge Admin | August 18th 2005 @ 12:08 pm

Dave and Jason are best friends who are creating a buzz to get the rest of us to talk about them and thier blogs. Think about it people.

  26. 26. David Streever | August 18th 2005 @ 1:04 pm

What the? Look, the guy’s site gets over 1 million hits–he’s in a specialised program.

As for SEO I agree with him. Building a site clean & properly is NOT SEO–because you are optimising it for the people & for the machines. Optimising it just for the SE is a bit duplicitous.

Is it a search engine you want to use the site, or a person?

  27. 27. John (SYNTAGMA) | August 18th 2005 @ 7:46 pm

Well, Dave, whether you’re the spawn of Satan or a Pilgrim Father in a stovepipe hat, at least you give us something to post about. And we all know extra content adds dollars to the web economy.

edit by DaveN .. Fixed link htpp:?? <- whats that about dude :)

    > I think those folks–let’s call them the “evil SEO folks–are dead now that search companies are getting so good at kicking out spammers/linkblogs/etc.

Excuse me for laughing! Where on earth (or probably more likely outer space) are you?

If you want to belive that shit then go right ahead - it just leaves more room for the rest of us to do our jobs :) … But, you are dead wrong and that is a bloody fact, pal!

  29. 29. Arun | August 20th 2005 @ 12:21 pm

Perhaps if anyone cared to read about the “Premium AdSense” program Google offers to large publilshers, This little spat wouldn’t have started in the first place.

I think its more than fair to say that the Weblogs, Inc. network receives more than 20 million+ content page views a month.

  30. 30. DaveN | August 20th 2005 @ 12:42 pm

“Premium AdSenseâ€? yer Jason did say that he would like to be a “Premium AdSense Publisherâ€?… so I guess He is Not
