Too tempting, but we all know they cheat using other methods!

http://www.seo-scoop.comIsn’t the point here that we can never be sure who is and who is not buying and/or selling links? And neither can Google! So, there’s really no way to answer your question. Even Insurance Blog’s answer isn’t a good one, because Google may very well be buying links. We can’t assume they aren’t.

http://www.seomoz.orgDave – this is like Deja Vu. I was just looking through a bunch of results on Friday and thinking the exact same thing. I even thought about making this same kind of post for Monday morning!
It is hilariously impossible to find SERPs where the top 10 aren’t buying links, though. Maybe one query would be http://www.google.com/search?q=news – and they are, sort of, buying links, but not in the way that you and I might do it (well, OK, at least not in the way that we’d do it personally)

lol Rand, I had you brain bugged so I could steal your ideas, lol
But really I was surprised, how many where so easy to spot, so here is the thing, could google remove that many sites without making their index look like poo.

As someone who sells links I have been thinking this for a long time. I know of no commercial serp that isn’t littered with sites buying links. For most companies you either buy them or you don’t rank.
If all those sites got nailed? A lot of people would not be able to find what they are looking for in Google and over time Google would lose search share. Especially since so many people use google to navigate and when a site is penalized it doesn’t even show up for it’s name. So what happens when consumers can’t find companies by name in Google anymore? They leave.

Um, yes? Do you mean none of the top 10 buys links? Or at least one of the top 10 buys does not buy links?
For the second question, it’s easy to find sites ranking in the top 10 for commercial terms that don’t buy links. And where none of the top 10 use purchased links? I think there are.
Not sure what you mean buy “commercial terms”, but I just did some searches that resulted in ecommerce sites in the top 10, and I doubt these sites buy links.
