The Big 3 Search Engines Gain Market Share In 2010
Yesterday I did a blog post asking whether Bing have gained market share at the expense of Google. James Murray from Experian Hitwise contacted me and kindly supplied me with the past 12 months % share figures of the top 3 search engines, so I thought I would share the results with you all…
It appears that all 3 search engines (Bing, Google, Yahoo) have gained market share, at the expense of the little guys.
Google.com dropped market share by 42%, but this was regained by Google.co.uk which increased market share by 13.4%, meaning Google overall went from 80.45% market share to 83.99%, giving an increase in market share of 4.4%.
Bing increased market share from 3.61% to 4.31%, an increase of 19.4% – although they are low on market share, this is a brilliant increase, one which Microsoft should be proud of.
You can see the latest figures on Hitwise.
Here is the raw data in table format:
| DATE | www.google.co.uk | www.google.com | uk.search.yahoo.com | www.bing.com | Other |
| Dec-09 | 67.40% | 13.05% | 2.29% | 3.61% | 13.64% |

| Feb-10 | 68.01% | 12.00% | 2.28% | 3.64% | 14.08% |
| Mar-10 | 71.89% | 8.37% | 2.25% | 3.54% | 13.95% |
| Apr-10 | 72.38% | 7.94% | 2.09% | 3.49% | 14.10% |
| May-10 | 76.06% | 7.68% | 2.32% | 3.65% | 10.28% |
| Jun-10 | 76.81% | 7.93% | 2.42% | 3.78% | 9.07% |
| Jul-10 | 76.28% | 8.24% | 2.60% | 3.71% | 9.18% |
| Aug-10 | 76.74% | 8.70% | 2.60% | 3.58% | 8.37% |
| Sep-10 | 78.68% | 7.01% | 2.43% | 3.57% | 8.31% |
| Oct-10 | 77.06% | 7.18% | 2.88% | 3.78% | 9.10% |
| Nov-10 | 75.97% | 7.41% | 3.40% | 3.98% | 9.24% |
| Dec-10 | 76.43% | 7.55% | 3.27% | 4.31% | 8.43% |
I guess this settles the arguement once and for all, which search engine do you want to rank in? Google.com or Google.co.uk? As you can see, if you’re targeting the UK market, Google.co.uk should be your first priority.

http://www.intelligentretail.co.ukThe thing is, in nearly all of my clients accounts, it shows what you have discovered and posted about yesterday – visits from Bing have overtaken Yahoo, and is often in 2nd place behind Google. This research indicates that Bing has stayed about the same, whilst Yahoo is actually increasing. Very odd results, I’ll be tempted to say that Bing is becoming more popular and pushing Yahoo out of the picture.

One thing that has always baffled me with search engine popularity and Google in particular is that Google talk a lot about ‘relevancy’ and delivering ‘relevant’ results based on the searchers query, but this in my opinion this is often exactly what they don’t do.
If Google are basing a large part of their ranking algorithm on the age of the website and it’s popularity (links pointing to it) then relevancy comes in at best a very poor third.
We all know that it is difficult to get a good ranking position on Google for a new website, but a new website could be more relevant than a stale old website that Google keeps displaying in the top position. Yahoo and Bing rank new websites much faster than Google which means that Bing is my search engine of choice simply because it’s content is fresher. Why do so many people continue to use stale old google when there is a much better search engine experience to be had elsewhere.
By the way I have no connection to Bing, Yahoo or any other search engine.
