Start Thinking Soldier?
Just thought I would bring to your attention the new “start thinking soldier” advertising campaign by the British army – they’ve got some new computer game on there to try and attract people to join the British Army. The US Army did a similar thing a few years ago, it just so happened the game was rubbish – and the British army game is certainly no Call of Duty – basically its a series of scenarios that you can play out by choosing an option (I’m very disappointed – I was hoping to blast away some terrorists whilst Dave and Becky are out of the office)! I’m also disappointed that out of the questions given me at the start “running away to fight another day” was not one of the options (I guess I wouldn’t cut it in the army).
Normally we have a bit of a laugh at the expense of these advertising campaigns (remember Nokia?) – they really should give the domain name, not tell people to search for the keyphrase!!! Anyways, for those of you who are wanting to have a go here is the link.
Update: I just wanted to give a quick update on this, personalisation by default came out later in 2009, if the campaign had run then it would have been more effective. If people typing in “start thinking soldier” were logged in though, then they would have likely had their search engine results personalised. For more explanation, please see Search “David Naylor” Online.

http://www.justguido.comYou may have found AA to be rubbish, but it was highly succesful with all the military nuts on the other side of the pond. I remember trying to pass the sniper trials quite well.
STS started out alright, but then slowed down and got really boring. I share your dissapointment.
Any military game that doesn’t allow you to stab people in the face with a knife, should not be allowed loose on the general public. Marketing departments need to learn to rely on actual gamers when they try to create games. Not go ‘oooh everyone will love clicking three times and then see our , let’s pay a couple of grand for someone to make that’.
Looks like you’re doing just fine for the query though.

http://www.david-whitehouse.org/Aaah I forgot what it was called – America’s Army… To be fair it was a pretty good effort. I don’t see why they don’t just sponsor a game like Call of Duty instead though…

http://www.justguido.comMaybe the message of violently slaughtering foreigners wouldn’t bring in the right kind of crowd. =D
And I really need to stop putting stuff in code brackets in WP comments.

Started off quite interesting – learned a couple of things, but then the tunnels scenario quickly descended in to boredom. The play controls were pretty bad- trying to look around and move at the same time was quite difficult. In the end, I got lost and just closed the browser.

I guess we can all knock it, but actually thought it was pretty good. It gave me a taste of some of the things & challenges you may get in the Army. Hats off to them to staying true to what the Army is about instead of them taking to the easy option of shoot em up.

http://www.david-whitehouse.org/Actually I don’t believe they do, at the end of the advert they say:
Search “start thinking soldier” online.

I don’t think you understand, they released it so that people could see what it’s like in the army and whether they would be good in it. Thats why they give you acheivments, to show you what use they could be. It’s not meant to be call of duty.
