Social SEO

by

Looking at recent news it appears the focus is still on social networking. MySpace now gains its spotlight on showcasing music and selling performance videos.  Facebook struggles with privacy issues ( or does it, think of the publicity the site has gained in recent weeks) Ebay are trying to crack Japan.

Companies will soon be asking for an entire presence on social networking sites and will realise the huge target audiences of ebay.

The whole shape of SEO is set to change and search is bound to be more and more social. Personally, I welcome the forthcoming changes. This should also shake up the worryingly high number of so-called internet marketing companies appearing on the web who offer little more than expensive review services and out of date SEO methodology.

Couldn’t agree more. I’m also looking forward to the uproar that will rise from the review buyers and catalogue-admitters when Google implement universal search in more areas.

I think we can look forward to new companies wanting to harness the branding power that is easily maintainable from social media.

I feel like social media actually has a little ways to go before there is really a demand in the industry. I am interested to see what happens, and currently thinking, what could I be doing for my clients and my self? Good stuff Dan!

    Hey Dan,
Very true, a couple of my friends work in music and you can already see that trend already taken to heart. Most of their band sites are simply a mini-blog with links to their facebook, myspace and bebo pages. It works too, one of the bands got a video featured on the youtube homepage recently – it got about 0.7million views before it dropped off the bottom and a very handsome traffic/link spike to the band’s homepage.

What really excites me is that this trend is new and we are standing on the edge. It is we who are going to develop patterns, strategies and tips…

From a purely business perspective, I don’t see any real shift towards things like Social Media, although Social Networking could play a growing role.

It’s all about barriers to entry (time, technical competence et cetera), ROI and how to quantify the benefits.

Give that this whole social web thing is still pretty new, until we can lay a yard stick against it and measure its value, most businesses will stick to SEO…

Social networking definitely rules in Google. I was doing a search yesterday and hoping to find some factual information to help with my son’s molars. All I could find was social networking sites.

Today’s search is social networking, that is waht search 2.0 is about!
Search 3.0 is suppose to become locolized and personal search, that is what Google tells us, have to wait and see how it fans out!

But I still believe social networking will be more relevent then genereci SERP results.

A user want to know about Ford he or she will go to Ford Website and social newtroking sites that talk about the brand. SE will be just an assistance tool to feret out relevent social networking sites that have authority on the required variable of data.

The end user will need to educate themselves on how to use the search engines to locate the right information.

The more the ebd user is profission in search the better and the more authoritative the information retrival experience will become.

The trouble with social networks, though, is that it’s utterly untargeted. The only way to make it worthwhile in an advertising sense is to make something fun around your brand – but then if you do that, are they just in for the fun and not the brand.

IMO social marketing is always going to be limited.

Heck, the big thing about SEO is that it was targeted – the big thing about the internet is that markets could be targeted much more easily than “old media” channels such as TV and radio.

And yet, here we are, going full circle – that somehow untargeted channels are superb marketing opportunities, and it’s all getting blown out of propertion.

Social media is a new channel, that’s all. It is in no way superior than being able to target a market effectively.

    2c. :)

Search engine optimization and social media marketing shouldn’t be confused as the same thing. Social media marketing can help with SEO but it really deserves its own attention because of the ROI it can produce outside of search. SEO’s should be aware of social media and certainly some strategies for SEO should involve social media sites depending on the client. But keyword focused Meta data and content with good internet architecture and back link connectivity still carries A LOT of weight in Google and will for a long time to come.

    Hi Dan:

I think social media is an excellent tool. Just for example a person can get more traffic in one hour than most get in a month from a well written informative post. With reactions such as that, who needs search engines, although relevance and conversion are a key factor, there is more than one way to carve a niche or have relevant traffic find you, it’s all about creative positioning.

There are blogs that are getting most of their traffic from social networking sites but rank poorly on google. It all depends on ROI. For a local business that sell bikes, traffic from stumble upon etc will not be as precious as traffic that has searched for a [bike] in [location].

I’ve noticed a trend where the traditional online directory and article submission services are now starting to offer social bookmarking services. I guess it must work.

I guess social bookmarking isn’t so much about links and more about organic traffic. I find Stumbleupon and reddit work really well for the effort involved.
