Social Media Snooping

- Social Networking
The likes of Facebook and Myspace are well known but not always the first port of call for SEO clients seeking a wider web audience, this is surprising when you consider the likes of Microsoft, Coca -Cola and Sony invest millions if not billions of pounds in advertising on these sites.
Websites that promote sociability and actively incorporate it in their core are the way forward. Consumers tend to be social creatures and such networking sites can make brand presence enormous.
Sites which build on connections and friendship have the power to market products more effectively than ever previously thought possible. Large corporations are now going beyond demographic information to secure their target audience, trends and characteristics of users are all very well but brand leaders are certain to want much more information from their consumers for a highly personalised and on-target approach.

Social media traffic can convert well if targeted properly, moreover its a cheap way to create brand awareness..
Dan, good topic to go with. Social Networking is a very important part of SEO, and now days even more important than search engines. When used properly by marketing execatives can breed royal user branding, but if not careful and pushy can destroy if not hurt a brand.
A very good example is of iPhone marketing itself through a negative Ad.
Geek Entertaiment: Dont you wish your cell phone was hot like me.
I mean, this video totally makes fun of iPhone but it is such powerful viral message that people are still watching it 3 months later.
Was the message presented subliminally or forced on the audiance with a PR agenda?
Now I would like to give you an example of bad social media behavior, but I do not want to singal out anyone.
It is not me..:) Eventhugh I am in the face SEO, I am still respected by the industry for my work. Maybe not by everyone. I think DaveN does not like as much as before, after I made a joke about him…NP DaveN, we solid.
Anyway you are all know who I want to recommend for negative suck PR, but I promissed to myself to get of that Wagon, for a while.
I ahev joined SAA and taking it easy not to stress out before the Turkey…
Oh, getting to be Old Fart SEO, forgot the video link.
Enjoy and have a laugh.

Hi Dan, with all respect, Marketing is different of SEO, sales is different of optimization, I Dont agree with “Sites which build on connections and friendship have the power to market products more effectively than ever previously thought possible.”
thats not true.
When someone goes to FaceBook, they’re not looking for stuff. They’re looking for people. But people don’t buy ads, stuff does.
That’s a problem.
Any platform that makes ads a distraction or a cost is always going to fail compared to a site where the ads are a welcome part of the deal.
Cheers
Lucio
Lucio,
I guess facebook being a popular site is not appropriate for ads? It’s a captive audience simple as. You never been in to a supermarket looking for sausages and come out with an mp3 player and a paint brush ;)
Hi Dan, some people seem to be coming out with a few mp3’s :), I started some advertising on facebook today just for some testing and although there is a ridiculously low ctr about 0.05% which is not a problem on facebook ppc model. Had treble the amount of leads so far from a normal day on Adsense and at 1/5th of the cost per lead and we have got a very strong Adsense campaign with a good cost/conv.
No one can really argue with the marketing power of social networking. It’s not a surprise that large companies spend so much on this kind of promotion. It’s also interesting to note the amount of thought and subtle manipulation that goes into a good social marketing campaign. It’s notoriously difficult to break into the teenage/young poeple market. It’s not jut a case of getting your name out there. You have to create the right street buzz, in a way that’s not too corny or predictable. If you look around there’s a lot of failed social marketing campaigns, that actually damage a company’s brand. If done incorrectly, social networks can drag your name through the mud. So it’s worth being cautious when venturing into this realm.
WDS, gold words, but you keyword stuffing on your blog.
Use a vacuum before EvilGoogle shreds you…:)
Interesting post. You know Jordan McCollum had a good post about fast growing social media sites over at the Pilgrim: http://www.marketingpilgrim.com/2007/11/the-fastest-growing-social-network.html
I like Gooruze for our industry, but does this mean there will eventually be a social network for everything? There pretty much is already, I guess as internet marketing experts we must remain well read in every type of social media network available.
