Social Media Sites Life Expectancy

by

Social media marketing is not just something you can tap into, well not with any level of impact anyway. You really need someone experienced in the field if you are about to embark on a social media advertising campaign. Social media sites don’t live forever though and I think that is something lots of marketing firms forget. Yes, it’s true the like of Myspace and StubleUpon do drive large amounts of traffic. But what about the long term prospects of these sites?

OK, there is bound to be some new social media sites on the horizon… But which ones are you likely to choose and why? Marketing efforts on social media sites could be good for short term but what approach is best for a sustained  long term strategy?

Just how many sites should we advise our clients to have some presence on: digg, reddit, squidoo, technorati, stumbleupon, newsvine, flickr, linkedin this list goes on..

Agreed, with all the new social media sites constantly opening the whole thing is becoming more and more diluted.

I’m sure when its all ironed out there will be a handful of leaders and the rest will be ignored for the most part.

I think it pays to do some research with any online marketing strategy. That sounds like common sense but for online advertising and markteing efforts to be succesful it pays to see what is out there.

What type of sites have a strong member base? What are the top subject that people are searching for on google. What insititutions/organizations have been around for a long time – way before the social media wave and now will be adapting these new practices.

Just jumping on the biggest website fad is, in my opinion, a bad strategy. You are 100% correct – websites come and go and with the flood of social media sites it pays to do a little homework on the topics that will be around long after the websites will.
