Setanta Sports goes into administration..

by

News has just broken that Setanta Sports has gone into administration in England after missing several payments to Large Football leagues – a shame for the 200 employees that will now be made redundant. All subscriptions will be stopped immediately so I’m happy!

The company will continue to operate in Ireland and via Setanta International.

Original Post:

it’s not often that I want a company to collapse, but Setanta have the worse customer services when you want to cancel, in fact the last 4 times I have tries I have failed !! I still pay for a service that I can’t get ! so them buy belly up may just save me a few quid a month…

why don’t you just cancel your direct debit with your bank then they can’t get your money

    simple as that

David Naylor has hit the nail right on the head. If there is a company with a worse customer service on the planet can someone tell me who it is. I’ve written numerous letters and emails to this ham and egg outfit and never once received a reply and trying to cancel your contract is a nightmare.
Please, please, please let them collapse and I hope their owners end up bankrupt for their disgusting attitude to their customers.

I cancelled my subscription for Freeview on the 3rd January, due to joining Setanta by Broadband, and despite countless calls and emails, they have still been taking my subscriptions! I took the desperate measure of cancelling my direct debit, last month, and despite even more calls and ‘demanding’ texts from them, they still don’t understand! NB They do however acknowledge over the phone that I emailed my cancellation on 3rd Januray, but it’s like talking to an overseas call centre, they just don’t get it! How simple and straight forward do they want it? They are now even threatening to take legal action to recover their ‘due’ monies! Customer service, they have never heard of it! Cowboys, and good ridance if they dissapear! It’s a great shame though, as their coverage of the Blue Square Premier and my team Cambridge United is why I joined, and without their sponsorship/TV rights/coverage monies, unfortunately more non league football clubs are going to go to the wall with them!

Same situation here. I tried cancelling in Feb. 2009 and was given the 30 day notice condition, which I missed by 1 day. Despite that , I discovered 2 months later direct debit withdrawals were still being made. When I contacted them again I was given the ” we have no record of your request for cancellation” letter, ” you will have to start over again”. I eventually received an acknowledgement to say I had missed the 30 day notice and would have my last payment deducted on 7/7/09. They deserve no sympathy when they treat paying customers like that.
People might critise Sky but when it comes to customer relations, they know how to turn it on

i’ve heard so many horror stories about setanta like this – i gave my 30 days notice last month but i’m with virgin media and they deal with them directly rather than me having to contact setanta so hopefully it will all go smoothly!

How I agree, this organsisation does not deserve to stay in business hurry up and go to the wall about time you got some of your own medicine.

WHAT A SHOWER OF COWBOYS !!!!

I previously worked in Setanta’s Dublin HQ office for several years, (not customer service but rather in the heart of operations on Merchants Quaye), and its an office run with a pure slap dash and devil may care attitude.

The owners swan in and practice their putting stroke seemingly oblivious to the major cock ups taking place all around them as the mostly drunken staff squander the subscribers money on half baked ideas and stab in the dark stratergies.

The TV production side of the business was particulary shoddy, being run in the style of superficial knowledge masquarading as deep wisdom. It was a woeful and badly structured studio.

This lack of attention to detail, judging by the comments posted here, has obviously permeated the subscription and customer service side of the business.

After seeing first hand the woeful lack of proper management and the “fly by the seat of your pants” planning stratergies it is no wonder that the toilet is finally flushing on this shower of cowboys.

Anyone passionate about sport will not be delighted to see Setantas demise. Allowing proven and professional outfits to buy the TV rights currently owned by Setanta and to do a proper jobwith them.

I also am having trouble cancelling i rang there number and was kept on hold for fifteen minutes, after going through all my details for ten further minutes i was told i had tgo give thirty days notice and i also had to e-mail to cancel when i asked why he had not told me this in the first place instead of putting me on hold with a premier rate number i could practically see him shrug his shoulder.
the e-mail address he gav me was request@setanta.co and so far my e-mails have been returned as no such address, can anyone give me the proper e-mail address and postal address so i can send them a registred letter thank you Norman

Why don’t you read your T+Cs, then you’d know how to cancel instead of ringing a premium rate number? Also, if you send a letter to a company and don’t send it recorded delivery you deserve all you get. Maybe spend less time on web forums and more time studying common sense.

P.S, Cancel your direct debit and you’ll be hounded for your cash, great advice from Dave Head there.

So what is the best way to cancel then?

I am aware that they require written notice but what address do I send this to?

Would it be a good idea just to cancel my direct debit and let them come after me?

I think Setanta staff are very rude, and not very helpful when trying to cancel your account.

They also stated that i had to pay almost 2 months subscription when i terminated my contract, but that is not so,as we can cancel with a 30 day notice.

    What a shower of crookes.

I rang Setanta on April 22nd to cancel my subscription (knew I had to pay until the end of May) which was OK as I wanted the remaining Premiership games. I was talked into reducing my payments to £9.99 a month after being told they were screening 46 Premiership games 2009-2010 starting in August, and I would have to pay a joining fee to start up again so I would be worse off by cancelling. I rang on 20th June to cancel as they won’t be screening any Premiership games, and was told as I agreed to reduce the payments to £9.99 that tied me into a years contract. At no time was this mentioned at the time and I don’t intend paying after my 30 day notice period. I have sent them a recorded delivery letter today to: D.SAT CANCELLATIONS, P.O.BOX
    192, NEWRY, COUNTY DOWN,BT35 5BF.
I have also written to my credit card company who make the debit payment (harder to stop than a direct debit). If need be I will cancel my credit card to stop them taking money from me after July

Fill in the online form, but will still be liable for the 30 day cancellation period.

Have completed and submitted the online form as per Keith’s advice.

This has been acknowledged and I am assured that somebody will contact me by phone to discuss in the next 48 hours. Can’t say I’m too expectant of a response!

I have also cancelled my direct debit with immediate effect however I am happy to pay anything they feel I may owe to cover the next 30 days.

I’ll wait to see what happens now.

    Cheers

    RE CANCELLATIONS TO SETANTA
After having no acknowledgement of lots of email to requests@setanta.co also request@setanta.com (that is also without the ‘s’ on reqests which some have advised) which is what their customer services said I had to do, I have sent them a registered letter to P O BOX 192 NEWRY CO DOWN BT35 5BF . I told the post office cashier what is was and why and she said the address on their system is SETANTS\SPORTS PO BOX 19 BT355BF .

WELL WELL! MEANWHILE I AM STILL RECEIVING THEIR CHANNELS SO THEY CAN STILL CHARGE ME

Shouldnt people be allowed to have their say? If multiple voices are ‘spreading’ concern then clearly they must be an issue with your employers, you pay for a service you expect answers when things go wrong, don’t you?

    Re – Maria Martin.

Maria, I’m sure no one posting messages on this blog has any ill feeling to the individual employees of Setana, but we all felt the same frustration of being fobbed off and not being kept updated on the future of the company.

I’m a big football fan and my team play’s in the SPL, so unfortunately I have missed out as well.

With Setanta now going into administration I hope you have not lost your job, but in the current economic climate, we all have that hanging over our heads.

Anyway chin up life goes on.

In reference to Maia’s comment I am compelled to remind her that none fo the comments appear to be “spreading rumours”. They are simply stating cold hard facts anout their experiences as customers of Setanta Sports.

The demise of Setanta is sadly a sign of the savage times we live in.

Perhaps the sentiment expressed by Maria that commentators here should “grow up” is a bit trite at best and at worst just pointless knee jerk gibberish .

It’s sad that setanta has failed but that does not justify ill considered outbursts by Setanta employee’s
    against legitimate grievances.

I’m *far* too tight to ever pay for anything like that in the first place :)

I believe they outsourced their customer service, so it’s little wonder it was shoddy. Pound to a penny the callcentre guys were being incentivised by customer retention so it won’t have been in their interests to let you cancel. Sounds like about 9 million companies I’ve had to deal with recently – TalkTalk being a particularly odious example of the genre. Sad for the people losing their jobs, but a just reward for the company itself.

Wow, it looks as though if this company had kept trading they could have competed with Orange for the wooden spoon in the customer service category!

I heard on talkSPORT yesterday that they were still taking money of customers for July subscription this week. Some people were also moaning that it’s the Premier League that is to blame for Setanta’s downfall as they were taking to much money lol It looks to me though as it was just a poorly poorly run company who didn’t conduct a proper market analysis and then peed what few customers they did have right off.

I had all the same problems when swopping from freeview to broadband,as they were still collecting money for something i had cancelled, and again they said they had not received my email of cancelation.

Being sick of paying for something i was not receiving i decided to contact “The Judge” in the Sunday Mail,to try and sort things.

They were quick enough to admit they were wrong when they knew i had involved the national papers, but still took 4 months to sort out,and they gave me an extra months money back as a “goodwill gesture”

One thing i did make sure was all emails of communication were saved, and i actually found my 1st cancellation email and forwarded it to them by mail in the end,

Now will just cancel my direct debit for my broadband account, although we all must be due money as we all paid one month in front with our accounts.

i have a pub with a commercial sky package with setanta as a bolt on, im convinced setanta is a secret branch of sky to stop the monopolies comission sniffing round the scumbag thief that is sky.
i am charged over £700 per month (yes you read that right)!!! and all the money gets taken by sky , i dont get a seperate bill from setanta. i look forward to seeing what they take out of my account this month.
i advise all publicans in the country to cancel all their sky packages to stop this stangle hold murdock has on our beautiful game.

Just a quick question ……. Even though Setanta has went into Administration, the rumour is that we still have to cancel our subscription ???

Does anyone know if this is right ?

    Any help would be appreciated.

I tried to cancel Setanta sports two weeks ago. I understood that you paid in advance, but was told I would have to pay one months payment for cancelling, why when I do not want and I am not watching there programes. Today I had a letter from them telling me I had not contacted them in the alloted time, having had two text messages in two days ,and having responded to these within 10 mins of the texts. I have also e-mailed twice to no avail, they are now threatening me with legal action, for so called non payment of my contracual fees. I am looking forward to them trying!!!!

To be fair Brett, isn’t your subscription based on how big your establishment is (it was for my old hotel)?
£700 p/m is £167 p/w, that’s not a lot to recoup. If your shifting 20 kegs a week then it’s only just only over 10p per pint (not taking into consideration any other drinks). If a drinker necks 3-4 pints while watching the game he’s only paying 40-50p to watch a Prem game.

well now that setanta has gone under and i have lost my job i dont need to hold back. I completely smpathise with all the customers of setanta because it was such a badly run company i got to see first hand the wooful customer service from some of the agents and the easy go attitude of the managers they only started to train people again when they heard setanta where in danger. I used to work for a previous sales environment and couldnt believe the way setanta treated their staff and would like to say on my part i couldnt do anything to help the customers although i would have liked to.

i use to work for Setanta on a branch in Northern Ireland, i agree with Dave N Setanta are a bunch of cowboys, customers were ripped off something serious it was easy mistakes the company was making and it was not hard to respond to a simple e-mail and that would have saved so much bother but i knew the company and how they operated and i am glad they are going, going and definitely gone lol i feel sorry for the customers in the end it is them who suffered this terrible ordeal
