Firewall Script

Ok one of my wifes favourite sayings at the moment is “busy idiots”, basically you are busy all the time but never focused enough to get things done. I have been looking at different open source solutions to stop 0 day expoilts, XSS hacks , and in fairness there are quite a few open source products out there, but the time and effort setting them up is just crazy, so I have decided to do a deal with Firewall Script. We are going to be including it in all our new wordpress client installs, I really like this product a lot, it’s easy to install and set up, so easy Dan almost did it here .. lol..

Anyway I want your points of view on it, the cost is just over £40, is it worth it? I mean have you ever tried to install modsecurity on a shared hosting platform?

Free WordPress Themes

So I create a few Free Wordpress Themes, let say 10 add a bit of copy say ..

Welcome to Free Wordpress Themes I decided to create a set of 10 Free Wordpress themes and the terms are. they are 100% free wordpress themes for personal or commercial use, You don’t have to pay me a penny in fact you don’t have to pay anyone a penny. they are totally ready to use with Wordpress 2.5. Just install and go! ….

I think I got the fact that they where free, so the foot links should be good, well I could always included a license in the download and edit the rss output and pingback etc ;)

but free wordpress themes is quite a competitive term I guess, unless I PPC

wordpress themes

$0.35 - $0.47 1 - 3 183 - 231 $70 - $110

until it ranks for that term then just keep changing the footer links ..

so for should I build 10 kick arse awesome and Free Wordpress templates ? or would Google just fuck me over :(

Wordpress Development Plugins

Wordpress as a content management tool is great, lets face it everything is in one place and the development opportunities are somewhat endless. The amount of scrapers on the web can be a real pain in the neck, so when a new plugin is developed that makes scrapers work for you rather than against you my ears pricked up.

Why not have a look at Joost’s latest working make scrapers work for you.

Wordpress 2 Widget sidebars

Ok on David Naylor I hope you noticed the 2 widget sidebars, well here is the code:

in your Theme’s function.php

[php]if (function_exists(”register_sidebar”)) {
register_sidebar(Array(”name” => “sidebar”));
register_sidebar(Array(”name” => “sponsors”));
}[/php]

Then in your template to add for column 1
[php]
< ?php if (!function_exists('dynamic_sidebar') or !dynamic_sidebar("sidebar")) { ?> etc.. < ?php } ?>
[/php]

and likewise for column 2
[php]
< ?php if (!function_exists('dynamic_sidebar') or !dynamic_sidebar("sponsors")) { ?> etc.. < ?php } ?>
[/php]

screen shoot for Admin panel on it

WordPress: “Too cool for documentation”

I’m pissed off.

I’m trying to write a sidebar widget for the new WordPress. It’s a really simple widget, in fact it only has one option. Since widgets are part of WordPress now, naturally I thought - as the premier blogging platform, that I’d find some well-written API documentation on the codex detailing how to go about interfacing with the dynamic sidebar and admin section.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHA

Yeah I was wrong.

In fact, the best I could come up with was an insultingly nonchalant overview at Automattic’s website along with some kind of excuse for an API.

I defy anyone to write a sidebar widget that works with the built-in widgets UIs using the information on these websites. I reckon you can get close but there’s bits of information missing about the admin panel. Apparently there’s some Google Search widget that you can look at that’s well-commented but I can’t find that anywhere within my WordPress source tree.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the laid-back “cool Web 2.0″ style but there are boundaries. And saying API Documentation is “for eggheads” is a bit childish, honestly.
