Matt Cutts on his Blog is trying to show you what keyword stuffing is, but Honestly I think Matt is using the wrong term here, he shows a site that has 50k of non relevant keywords, stuffed into a textarea box… Matt are you saying if those 50k keywords where all on the subject matter it would be ok.
to me Keyword stuffing is basically over cooking Keyword density on page :

BAD Seo Copy and keyword stuffing

yes, I chickened out of just posting the the actual piece of text with the keywords stuffed, I do think you can pick up a penalty for this and I don’t think I want to push Matt into a corner.. lol, But in my mind Keyword stuffing is adding keywords out of place or Hiding them… Matts example, well to be honest is just plain old stupid spam

Dave good analogy of keyword stuffing…and a smart move to get a screenshot of the junk.
But you forgot to metion keyword lists which are a penalty for keyword stuffing.
So let say I am selling Trolls and I have different variation of them, and I just list them one after another with no naturalaty in my writing. That would be a Master ofence. So the density of not over populating the content is important.
Also repeating the keyword many times in one document devaluates its authority.Igor

Dave, I just read Matt’s comments about keyword stuffing and I tell you one thing the guy who Matt is using as an example is a great Viral Marketer.
He is getting a free ride from Google from Spamming Google…
Ha, Ha, Ha..
He probably promotes his Website through email Spam, not even using his domain name in the Spam message but some .99 cents info domain for a redirect to his product…
These guys are on the ball…relying on Google alone will put you in the poor house…
There are so many ways to market a product and we have to take advantage of every opportunity we get.I chose to do it White Hat but try to be creative in doing it and not just follow the pack.

I agree 100%.
Matt’s post also educates nobody, I am more interested in learning how to write a better copy. I kind of hinted to this in Matt’s post and even used my own site as an example but who listens to me.

Isn’t most of that just common sense?
Firstly, the most important place for your keywords or phrases will be in the title for your page.
Secondly, placing related keywords in your h1, h2 and h3 tags will help the SE’s.
Finally placing your desired keywords in your first / last paragraphs should help. Oh, and most importantly, it should read well from a visitor’s point of view!
Good advice as always David.

The screen shot looks like an actual piece of text on a site. Google has been emphasising for long on the fact that stuffing your page with relevant/irrelevant keywords would eventually lead to a ranking penalty.

Hehe that’s funny that you didn’t want to post the actual text for some writing and had to show an image instead… I guess once we get spiders with OCR crawling around then even the image can’t be there. The internet is becoming a strange place…

I think so long as you work upon a keyword density percentage of around 5-10% you are generally ok. This density percentage needs to take into account everything though, including header tags, alt tags, image tags and so forth.

dave, happened to spot this one whilst doing something else. ok its old now but who cares.
we haven’t spoken but you did me a favour on a job a while back or at least i think you did! its been a while and i only just twigged the names. doh!
anyway i thought this keyword stuffing post was beautiful…..but what are you saying? SEO isnt about complete drivel on a page? are you saying well written english might actually help?
if you are, you’d better get down to sheffield and spread the word then….
joking aside, this is something ive used in pitches and seminars. ive REDUCED density and see rankings go up - enough said.
drop me a line if your planning any get togethers, ive seen a few posts. be good to meet up with other people in the region. not a great deal happening down here in sunny sheffield……
and my fiancee isnt too bothered about discussing canonicalization issues…..
all the best. jon

Personally, as a user, keyword stuffing to that extent would put me completely off a website. If the user has to read reams and reams of material all repeating the same few keywords, I would wonder where the actual ‘content’ of a site was, and probably back click the the next site on a SE.

I agree, the copy has to read right as far as the visitor goes, I would never keep reading an page full of keywords, just looks like spam. Need to combine search engine tactics with visitor optimisation.
Good post!

Hi Daven,
having read both articles, I’d say that Matt should complement his article using your examples,
I agree, the example Matt gave on his post it’s about spamming and not stuffing, but also agree with the comments that it shouldn’t be reason a ban.
Sometimes this is caused just for innocence or even bad advise. Another day I’ve got a co-worker copying and pasting (and changing) some of my posts to email his friend as his advice on how to build up ranking.
It happens.
Cheers
