Search Engine Reputation Management PT II

by

This time it’s Google’s Matt Cutts, for years Matt has been the master of “I can neither deny nor confirm, the existance of ….. ”

Search Engine Reputation Management Done Wrong by Matt Cutts
Search Engine Reputation Management Done Right by Danny Sullivan

Google is getting quite a bit of bad press at the moment, but I’m Surprised the way Matt responded this time, maybe because he is just back for holiday or something, But in the “Search Engine Reputation Management” game you don’t try to point the finger at your competitors or other industries, I mean

Google didn’t leak user queries
Google didn’t give millions of user queries to the Dept. of Justice

Then Matt has a pop at Hitwise about them buying ISP data and selling it, But fails to mention great tools like Adwords Keyword suggestion tools, where google show you pretty green bars, for Advertiser Competition statistics showing the relative amount of advertisers bidding on that keyword. now Google is collecting the ROI data I wonder if they will share that data too :)

But in the Uk You can’t bid on “Viagra UK” but when you use the keyword tool I Get:

erectile dysfunction uk
online pharmacy uk
online pharmacy in uk

HMM I WONDER IF THOSE ARE THE KEYWORDS THAT TRIGGER ALL THE “VIAGRA UK” ads in the UK on Google

I feel that Matt Cutts has no credibility when he takes the position of defending Google anyways: if you in your disclaimer clearly state that “Hopefully I never will” get criticized by his employer, one could easily imagine that his willingness to go out on a limb and actually say a single negative thing about his employer is somewhere near nil.

Also, I agree that pointing fingers is completely wrong here. I would dissect every single argument used/raised by the watch group, and try to address it.

Stating simply “I disagree” seems kind of ignorant – what, are they completely wrong in every single statement made? Give me a break. According to the Edelman trust barometer, we dont trust government, mass media and corporations. We trust people like us.

Matt Cutts in my mind has been, and represented a company that has felt like, a person like me. Today, for me, Google became a corporation.

yeh I think Matts a good guy who’s posted first with maybe thinking it through

People build up an attachment to companies especially if they are one of the early employees and the first reaction to bad press is to defend. And i suspect he’s doing that because the people who are supposed to do this aren’t and he’s frustrated

I’ve been there A Major uk tech journalist unfairly slagged off one of BT’s product I was uk support for – the problem was he hadn’t installed dos properly

I also got asked to post on alt.2600 when BT was getting flack over VMB’ing on switches (the MET police I recall) – even though this would have been vetted by secid in the end they asked me not to do it probably just as well people might think I was a secret squirrel

Dave T slagging your employer off in public will just get you fired though there where hints in a recent post that he wasn’t happy about letting a journalist into that search meeting.

The sad thing for Google is Matt probably has better political/pr skills than most of the rest of the company.
