Orange Mobile HTC TYTN 2

by

htctytn2

Late on Friday night my phone went wrong big style, I have the HTC TYTN 2 ( p4000 model), which if I’m going to be totally honest is an awesome handset but is failing to give me a kick up the backside to sort out a new phone. I had been Looking at the Iphone and the Android phone just because I’m a geek at heart, but as a business user I need a few things as standard and not work arounds.

1) It must let me have a Pan connection I need the ability to work on my laptop Via my Phone

2) I need email

3) I need a decent battery life ( I keep forgetting my charger )

and those 3 things alone ruled out the Iphone and Andriod, so I had decided that maybe I needed to upgrade with the HTC touch or Htc Touch Pro. When I rang Orange to report my phone failure it turned out I had less than 3 weeks until my contract expired and I could get a new handset ( in 2 weeks!). This was a real opportunity to sign me up for 12 months and send me a new handset htc touch or Pro, but NO instead they have to replace my old handset with a new Tytn 2 which I can keep for 2 weeks then they will upgrade me to whatever I want. I just feel what a waste of a handset.

It was Saturday afternoon when I rang and on Sunday morning the new handset turned up – wow super efficient customer service or what! I plugged the new phone into my laptop, setup a sync partnership, added mail accounts and the phone was sorted in less than 15 mins, then I found that the new handset had windows mobile 6.1 played with that for an hour ;) and decided that the touch pro better be awesome because I loving the Tytn 2 again ..

So what I want is suggestions on what phone I should go for ?

I need some advice here too. I’m moving back to the UK from the US next month and want a decent phone – not for texting or bopping to.

I may arrive in time for the new Google ‘phone release which is what I would really like…

BUT are there any phones over there that aren’t geared up for kids and chavs?

I’ve surfed Orange, Vodafone etc and can’t seem to see that perfect phone.

    Timely article

    Cheers

    Hi Dave,

I’d suggest from what you said, that you keep the one you’ve got, everything you’ve said points towards your geeky love for the phone, but also its practicality :-)

I’m a big Android advocate and I still think Android could fit your needs… and increasingly so. 3rd party apps are filling in the gaps as far as email synch, virtualization and beyond. Windows Mobile is a security blanket but it has so many pitfalls and downsides. Windows Mobile 7 is supposed to be awesome when it comes out but that might not be until 2011.

If you NEED Windows Mobile I would suggest you look at the HTC Touch Pro – but I’m a sucker for a Full QWERTY (hard) keyboard. Keep in mind that the HTC Touch Pro2 will be coming out soon. The Sony Ericsson Xperia has gotten decent reviews as well and if you’re a BlackBerry type, the Bold is a good option.

I understand how battery life is an issue but keep in mind that you can always carry a spare battery so long as you don’t have the iPhone – a lot of people do that.

Lastly, remember that the Palm Pre is coming and while its looking like a Vodafone or T-Mobile exclusive, you don’t want to get a phone and then be disappointed cause a better one comes out a month or two later.

If you need something now, I’m a personal fan of the HTC Touch Pro and the HTC Touch Pro2 should be rockin’.

Just want to add – don’t forget that the Nokia N97 is coming out very soon. Spec list on that is RIDICULOUS but it’ll be pricey, too.

@DaveNaylor “this is what I have http://tinyurl.com/csl7xu need advice” HTC Pro is a nice enough phone, but Windows Mobile frustrated the…

Dave, what tariff are you on with Orange? I think I’ll be leaving them at the end of my contract because I can’t seem to find a reasonably priced always-on data package.

There are a lot of new Android-based handsets in the pipeline, some coming out of the Far East which have a lot of potential but who knows how usable they’ll be.

My only concern with the N97 is that on my N95, the OS does start to get a bit sluggish with a couple of apps open. If the N97 is beefy enough, it will probably be at the sacrifice of battery life.

You’re better off just buying a selection of mains/car/usb/solar/wind-up chargers for whichever handset you do go for.

Get the replacement TYTN II for now, then upgrade to a Touch Pro/Pro2 so you can compare new and old side by side. Flog whichever you don’t like.

I think once I’m on a decent data package, I’ll just buy unlocked handsets and not be tied to some random network like 3.

I’m the only guy at Latitude without an iphone – by choice. The HTC Touch Pro is great, and you can Copy and Paste!

‘The touch and toiuch pro are both great phones, except for one flaw regarding the screen, im on my third screen for my touch pro. One simply failed and was replaced under t-mobile warranty, the next 2 screens cracked corner to corner. Ended up having to pay for both replacements.

Jazus – obvious I haven’t come to your site in a while. It’s very… different from the last time I visited :)

Maybe take a look at nokia E71. I get three days out of battery (unless using wifi heavily), and I think it ticks all the boxes you have. Also the most solid phone I’ve ever owned.

Browser isn’t iphone, but it does the trick. You can push email to it etc. Menus are fast, and reasonably well laid out. Screen is nice.

If I picked anything bad out it’s the camera in dark conditions. But each firmware update seems to improve things.

    Very nice phone IMO

Alrite Dave, I thought that you upgraded to the Diamond a while back. I did and while I sort of like it, I sort of regret it too because of the lack of hardware keyboard and slowness of the touch flow. Think I’ll give Android ago next time unless Windows mobile dramatically improves enough to eliminate the need for touch flow.

@Joff, I managed to get my Orange contract down to £20 pm. 500min 100txt, unlimited data (300mb I think) and free home broadband. The Diamond cost me £5 with that package. That was 6 months ago though.

I’m leaning towards exchanging my HTC s730 with the HTC Touch HD. I too need email, pc mobile connetion and quite a bit of power. The Touch HD just seems to do it?

I have the TYTN2 and its a great phone, just found it a little slow when you compare it with the new generation Blackberry – Don’t get the Storm, I went with the Blackberry Bold as it has the same firmware as the storm but with a very usable qwerty keyboard. It is seriously fast, and I’m with Vodafone so the network speed is also great.

My contract ran out in January but have decided to keep my Nokia E90 and go onto a monthly tariff for the time being. There seems to be a LOT of good phones due out. The one I am holding out for is the Palm Pre. If they pull it off it sounds like it would fit your needs easily.

Android is supposed to be excellent but at the moment the G1 is a bit crap due to the hardware, I am sure some quality Android phones will be out in the next few months.

As mentioned above WM 6.5 is due out this year along with the HTC Touch Pro2 but that is more likely to be the 2nd half so I doubt you will be wanting to wait that long!!

I have head good things about the touch HD but it is sans keyboard which is a ballache to me.

If I had to chose any phone from Orange that meets your spec id probably go with the Nokia E71. It is regarded very highly, looks nice, has a brilliant battery life and plays nicely with email as it uses S60 so you can have MS Exchange etc. It can also handle connecting to the internet via your phone though I can vouch for how good it is at doing that.

I’m going to look at the “G2″ when it comes out in April (not actually seen a G1 in person yet).
