Microsoft Snipping in Vista

One coolest little toys in Vista is the snipping tool :

snipping tool

You can Free Form snip, Rectangular snip, Window snip or Full screen snip and then just email it or save it. this alone as saved me so much time from alt - PrintScreen then open Fireworks Ctrl+V then export it.

so much so It lives right here on all my systems :

To find the snip tool click the Windows Jewel ;) open accessories and drag it to the quick launchbar !

Great tip, Dave. I was just cropping a screen shot not more than 20 minutes ago, so the timing couldn’t be better.

Have you ever tried SnagIt? It totally rocks. SnagIt allows the same screen capture feature but it also does video capture, different shapes for capturing and much more. It has the ability to add drop shadows and other highlights to the snagged image in just seconds. Plus it gives you the option to save the new file in about 10 different formats. It cost $40 but I think it is a bargain.

I’ve always used this tool for grabbing stuff. http://www.progency.com/other.html plus it’s free!

But there is a cost for organic, this is something a lot of people forget, especially these days it does cost to rank in the organics. Sometimes a lot more than you would think is required.

I haven’t come across that tool, but it’ll definitely come in useful as I regularly screenshot elements… even though I’m thinking of rolling back to XP Pro. Vista is useless at transferring large files and unzipping takes A-G-E-S!

not on my xp home by default… perhaps need to download this snipping thing?..

My (brand new) laptop takes about 15 minutes to load up Vista, about 30 seconds to load Ubuntu - guess which one I use…

Thanks for the tip! I hadn’t noticed that tool yet.

    Cheers.

    That’s brilliant.
I never would have spotted it.
Just what I need for the tender I’m writing :)

You can actually get Snagit version 7 for free now, see:

I use Wisdomsoft’s Screenhunter (free version) and it works pretty good. I think it does everything SnagIt does but it sounds like SnagIt is free now so I guess you have more than one option now when you switch back to XP.

Not a post to say Mac is better, just that the free included Grab application that has been there since the first version of OS X isn’t in the dock at install and some users might not even know it exists. Does all mentioned above and extremely useful. Good to see Windows users have this too.

Can’t help it. Since we can have the photoshop suite here at work I use “WinSnap” for screenshots. Works neat and gives screenshots a fancy shadow ;-)

    It’s free too:

The first time you click the link for the Snipping Tool, it asks if you want to add it to the Quick Launch Bar anyway.

This seems much better than the old PrtScr button and then pasting to paint to crop, edit, resize and save.

Maxthon v2 - the superior IE-based browser (bring it on!) - has a very similar screen capture tool built-in (Vista and XP).

    Dead handy for blogging.
