Microsoft Search Catch Up

by

There’s no doubt that Microsoft has indeed dominated the Corporate computing market for the last decade at least. Why then pursue the search market with such vigour ?

Money. Simple as so it seems. Steve Ballmer the chief executive of Microsoft spells it out for us, see the Microsoft Search related article in the New York Times.  “There are only three things on the Internet that have made money: Amazon, eBay and Google,” he said. “If we’re going to make a lot of money on the Internet, we’ll have to challenge Google in search”

It could of course be argued that many of the current developmental  phases of Google Search are purely driven by making more money, but I wonder just how much of a detrimental effect money making focus has on the real user experience and indeed if following such a path is indeed hindering Microsoft making in-roads into Search.

We need to keep in mind that Microsoft does not really need the advertising revenue from Search at present, unlike Google that really has only one revenue model.

Mmm, I know PayPal are owned by eBay, but that seems like a different business to me, that’s made money.

I think apps as a service are a huge potential future growth area too – something Google (and Microsoft and Yahoo! of course) are all pursuing, but can hardly be called the same as Google’s web search.

Obviously he’s speaking broadly, but really within some of these there are in fact multiple distinct things which make serious money.

Why did Microsoft finally do away with “Get the Facts”? Not surprisingly, there are no talking points available on that one.Maybe its open-source partners (Novell, Linspire, Xandros, SugarCRM, XenSource, etc.) asked Microsoft to stop fanning the flames. Although there is a “Compare Windows to Linux” tab on the new Compare site, nearly all the material there is targeted specifically at Red Hat — one of the Linux distributors that is continuing to refuse to sign a patent-protection agreement with Microsoft.
