Do we think the Big M will end up purchasing Yahoo….It’s put the offer in (£22.4bn) Should give the online services that Microsoft offer a boost.
We have great respect for Yahoo, and together we can offer an increasingly exciting set of solutions for consumers, publishers and advertisers while becoming better positioned to compete in the online services market,” Microsoft chief executive Steve Ballmer said.
So will Microsoft Buy Yahoo ?
Or may Google step in, what do you think ? ( wouldn’t be the first time, remember AOL lol)

I don’t thing Google will jump at this. And even if they’d want to, do they have the money for it?
Heh, MS and Yahoo together would be like 1,5% of the Dutch search market :P
[…] Dave Naylor points out that an offer does not mean it will happen. he wonders if Google will step in. I doubt Google would get it past the authorities though. Share and Enjoy: These icons link to social bookmarking sites where readers can share and discover new web pages. […]
Unbeleivable really! Its a lot of money!! I wrote a bit about the post acquisition integration stuff and possible job losses which may well ensue here. Hopefully interesting further reading for some of you.
If the deal is closing then this is possible to be the only hope for MS and Yahoo to try to meet the 2008 expectations and to get closer to Google. But let’s not forget:
1. The announcement is made with 3 day after Yahoo! reported the fourth quarter and full year 2007 financial results: http://yhoo.client.shareholder.com/common/download/download.cfm?CompanyID=YHOO&FileID=163792&FileKey=d27edf0c-7cd0-476c-9929-2eac03454c6f&FileName=163792.pdf
2. Infact Yahoo had a drastic decrease in share of searches in 2007: http://www.submitsuite.com/blog/search-engine-trends-and-share-of-searches-in-2007-91
While I do wish Google had real competition (with all the respect due to Google), does putting two companies that have trouble executing a search strategy together make for a Google competitor?
I think not.
In most mergers and acquisitions, the only real winners are the advisors from the legal and financial profession and the executives who get big buy outs.
Hehe, same goes for Denmark Joost. Yahoo especially and MSN to some extend, are not really a factor in +85% Google Land :)
I’ve got to agree with Sean Carlos on this one. Putting two companies with histories of bad search strategies together will only lead to one big company achieving similar results. While I don’t deny that “MicroYahoo!” would pull a lot of interest from those involved in search and SEO, whether it would come to be a competitor to the big G by pulling in the masses is not something I would bet on. People would try it out for a while, then fall back into familiar habits… Google is so popular it has been officially recognised as a verb, and to break that trend is going to take something BIG.
just a one thought .. think about Flickr, Yahoo Mail and MSN Messenger, Hotmail and Vista.. do you really see Ad’s as a search product !
Dave
This deal is really, really big, and Google will have a much harder time competing against the combined company.
It’s bad for many smaller SEOs though - that’ll be one less search engine to potentially have some rankings in.
Have you see the Flickr protest yet?
