Memory Foam Mattress – help needed

by

Ok, I was chatting to a salesman about mattresses the other day, I have always liked the Big Heavy Feather filled type the sort you can actually snuggle into. Well Becky has been sold on the memory foam idea, but I’m not sure. Dan used to have memory foam but said “he just sank to the bottom but his wife said her side was fine!” … hmm Becky is about the same size as Dan’s wife and I’m only slightly smaller than Dan, So what’s the score… is Memory foam ok if you are 6 foot and heavy and you partner is 5’6 and very light ! Do you end up sleeping at different levels in the bed?

I work for a company that sells mattresses. I don’t work directly with mattresses as I do the website, but working in the office I hear the talk all the time.

The thing I hear from a lot of people on the memory foam mattress is that after so long they will stop returning to their shape. Some people it happens to after a year, some people it only takes about 6 months.

At some point there will be a ridge/hill in between you and your wife.

I bought a pocket sprung memory foam mattress from a reputable Briitsh manufacturer two years ago, within a year it had dipped severely on both my side and my husbands side leaving a huge hard ridge in the middle, it was so uncomfortable I stopped sleeping on it and slept on the couch instead. In September the manufacturer replaced it but within the few months I’ve had it, it has begun dipping in the same way as the last. The manufacturer has offered me a replacement if I pay 40% of the cost of a new one as they say the new mattress doesn’t carry a new warrantee but only a continuation of my last one, what a rip off. I’m getting rid of the memory foam one ASAP and going back to a good Ortho one.

This is exactly what happened to my memory foam mattress. Both ends have sunken down and the middle part is raised up so we feel like we cannot sleep together we tend to roll to opposite ends now. It didnt take long about 6mths+ Waste of money tbh and Im now looking to buy a new mattress.

It takes a while, but once you’re used to it you’ll really enjoy it.

Since you’re into “the Big Heavy Feather filled type”, it’s a good choice. There’s nothing like returning from a trip sleeping on hotel beds and then getting to sleep in your memory foam bed.

Quick Tip: Get it delivered right before you’re going to be out of town for the weekend. The mattress can kind of smell at first so letting it air out for a couple of days can help eliminate that.

I love mine but it’s a combined sprung mattress with 3 inches of memory foam on the top. Best mattress I’ve ever had. I’m 6’5″ and certainly don’t seem to make a bigger dent in it than my more petite wife.

    Dave,

As you know I am a fat git.

My wife is not petite but she’s not big.

We both suffered with bad back for years until we got one and it’s been a revelation these last two years since we’ve had it. No mattress turning, no meeting in the middle (unless you want to), but it doesn’t stop you snoring!

We’ve had a full memory foam mattress for about 2 years.

I’m 6′ 4″ and and 15 stone and haven’t had any problems with sinking to the bottom and backache is now a thing of the past.

The only thing that takes a while to get used to is that memory foam mattresses feel much warmer in summer than sprung mattresses – no air movement through them I guess.

    Dave,

DON’T BUY a memory foam mattress. This chemicals used to make these things are NASTY (hence David’s comment about the smell) and unless you’re looking for more ways to get cancer I’d stay away from them.

My wife and I were looking into them because she too was sold on the idea, but after a bit of research into the chemicals used I decided to give it a pass.

    Dave,

I LOVE my memory foam mattress!! I’m 5’11″ and ~220lbs. In 2 years of heavy use it’s still works as well as the day I got it. I used to have chronic back and hip pain and it completely went away after <2 weeks in the new memory foam bed and has never returned. My wife is about 100lbs lighter and there’s no difference in her side versus mine or any hill in the middle.

The key, IMO, is getting a high quality memory foam bed, not just a memory foam topper or cheap walmart solution. you get what you pay for.

i’ve had the memory one for 2 years and its still great. its tempurpedic, not a knockoff. my wife and I sink right in, and no, we’re not on different levels, and no, she doesn’t roll toward me. it takes a week to get used to, but your back will thank you for it.
concerned about chemicals? then stop smoking, or smelling air freshener, or eating fast food, but don’t worry about the chemicals in your mattress.

    Dave,

Heard you at SES last month and loved every bit of it.

I’m 6′ 2″ and my wife is 5′ 5″. We’ve had memory foam for over 6 years. I loved it at first but don’t care for it much now and am looking to pillow top beds. The wife loves it still. The problem for me is I sleep on my stomach and so the way I sink into the thing makes my back hurt after about 3-4 am depending on when I get to bed. They are also fairly warm in the summer when it’s warm upstairs.

If you are a side sleeper foam is probably a great way to go. The thing has held up wonderfully over the years hence the reason i don’t go buy a new bed. I’m too cheap to part with something I paid so much for and is still like new.

    Dave,

I got one from a well know Swedish household shop and it has about 3inches of memory foam on both sides so you can turn it over when you need to and enjoy the same comfort. I’ve had mine a year now and just turned it last week and it still has the same level of comfort. Once you go foam you never go back.

Yeah I have a memory foam mattress. The key to keeping to for longer is simply rotating the mattress. Its just like and other mattress really. I have noticed that when I just rotate the mattress every month or two the part that was having trouble before is completely restored by the time I flip it again.

My wife and I have had a memory foam mattress for three years. It takes a little getting used to but I find it comfortable enough. There is certainly no rolling into the middle – each person ends up in their own hollow, shaped around their body. It’s a bit weird at first.

The main problem is that it is seriously warm, even in winter. It doesn’t seem to breath at all and in summer it almost feels like its radiating heat (and it isn’t a cheapo item).

We won’t have another, but they do help your posture if you are prone to aches and pains in bed.

Sophie and I have one, it took a couple of days to get use to it, and you do sink an inch or 2 but not a lot. They are great in the sense it stops you rolling into each other in the night.

My only complaint is when you do the missionary position it as pain on your wrists as your hands sink in about 3 inches.

But you will get a great sleep we went for one of the firm ones.

If you want one Dave let me know as we have 2-3 supplier I can get you one from for trade + P&P

Iv read a number of your comments above, so to answer a few questionsplease see my answers: basically it comes down to the quality of memory foam used, i.e. the quality of the products used with the manufacturing, there are companies out there that use cheap materials and there for there mattresses last a fraction of the time it should do, memory foam mattress should come with a minimum guarantee of 5 years some even come with 20 years, if they don’t then don’t buy it, its also helps buying from a reputable supplier, no cheap imports of Ebay and China, that’d be a waste of money, also regards to them getting hotter in summer, yes you guys are right they do, but if you do your research you can find mattresses that come with channels corrugated on the top surface and also fabric covers that let the mattress breath and decrease the chances of you getting hot using the products. also you shouldn’t bottom out on the mattress if you do then its a cheap imitation and id return it ASAP.Quality memory foam mattresses will always return to there original shape, that is where the term memory foam is derived from, the foam remembers its original shape and returns to it, so if it stops returning to its original shape you have been sold a cheaper produced product. Always ask your supplier, what is the density and also where the products manufactured and how much memory foam is used on the mattress so how many inches etc Visit our website and read some of the articles we have written, we manufacture and supply online, so any questions just ping us an email, http://www.cushysofa.co.uk

    Hi,

I’ve spent more than enough time researching memory foam mattresses, and eventually plumped for what appeared to offer the best mix of depth, firmness, comfort, price, etc. We were not disappointed! (went for the ‘ergoflex HD memory mattress’)

    The things to consider are:

Type of memory foam – the thing to look for here is ‘visco-elastic’ (You don’t want to end up with something with the same spec as sponge…)
Density: The higher the better – ensures more support and that it lasts longer (apparently this is also a good sign of how advanced the manufacturing technology is)
Depth: Don’t worry too much about the overall depth of the mattress – the real concern is the depth of the memory foam itself – this is what costs the money and delivers the goods!
Temperature regulation: Look for something that allows the foam to breathe – this is what will ensure you don’t overheat. (Can’t see how a cover made of a certain fabric will keep you cool, but seen plenty available)
Guarantee: Lots of companies offer what appears to be a decent guarantee, yet when you look closer, the claim level depletes each year, pro-rata. Look for a company offering a solid, genuine guarantee that doesn’t diminish with time.
Price: Too cheap and you’re likely to get something that will fall to bits in a year or so, too pricey and you’re subsidising TV adverts and over-paid salesman – try and balance specification with price.

We bought ours in the January sale from http://www.ergoflex.co.uk and it’s wonderful. It’s ‘HD’ (high density), and sort of a medium/firm feel. The feel of the memory foam indicates the quality straight away, it’s very well made, and most importantly, it’s very, very comfy!

I’m also about to buy my daughter a single from here for Xmas!

Hi. I work for a company that sells mattresses as well. Although I do not work directly with the product, I am quite knowledgeable from working with other staff members who are. The memory foam mattress is perfect for your issue in my opinion. You just have to make sure you get a high quality mattress that is dense in foam. This is not a purchase that you want to skimp on or purchase without knowing exactly what you need. Most memory foam mattresses come with a guarantee and some sort of trial. So, you should have no problem with being satisfied!

Hi there Steve and Sally , Sally regards to the ( Sealy True Form Gracehill Harbor ) iv had a look at it and it seems like a good bed , however it is a rather large amount of money for what your getting, you realy dont need 2 – 3 layers of memory foam on your bed , I also couldnt find anything about the density of each layer of memory foam used, personally you can buy something just as good at a 3rd of the price. Steve your memory foam mattress shouldnt sag at all , the whole term ( memory foam ) is that the foam returns to its orginal shape, you realy should have a word with them and explain that you feel you are not getting what you asked for or what it says on the tin, ask for a refund . take a look at some articles we have written about memory foam and also at some of our memory foam mattresses and other memory foam products http://www.cushysofa.co.uk

I have just purchased a custom size memory mattress from http://www.sleepdetox.co.uk, could not get one from anywhere for a decent price. The mattress is made from a top layer of memory foam with a reflex foam base. I have had it 2 weeks and it has given me a fantastic sleep. I brought a mattress off eBay previously but the mattress dipped after 2 months of use, i realized later that it was an import from china and was made from low density memory foam. Always check the density of the mattress before you buy otherwise you will end up sleeping in a ditch. Not all mattresses are made from the same quality of foam. hope this helps

I was having terrible trouble during my pregnancy earlier in the year and thought a memory foam mattress would help. I was told to avoid the cheap eBay ones as they do not last and collapse go for the best you can affod and don’t buy the ones where they suck all of the air out, it just saves them money and can ruin the mattress. I bought mine from http://www.bestbuymemoryfoammattress.co.uk and it was the best thing ever. I am 8 stone and my other half is 15 stone and we both sleep like babies after years of mediocre sleep. I only wish I had one of these 10 years ago. I forgot what a good nights sleep was.

Dave, lucky for you I am a sleep expert, literally. Memory foam mattresses are definitely the way to go man. That comment at the top about the mattress not returning to its original shape is a bunch of bologna. Memory foam promotes better blood flow throughout the body, conforms to your body by way of regulating to your body temp, and does not create pressure points throughout your body like spring coil mattresses. This isn’t just made up, its science, its been legitimately researched, heck its Physics! My advice to you is to stick with a mattress that has a density of 2 or greater. 3-5 is ideal. Good luck man!

Just over two years ago we bought a Kaymed memory foam bed – not cheap at over £1000. We were assured that it would be suitable for my wife who suffers with back and hip pain. It was great until the mattress formed two large dips and a hard ridge in the middle – despite being rotated regularly – as these mattresses cannot be turn over. With my wife barely being able to stand some mornings after sleeping on the bed, we contacted the retailer. The retailer – ‘britain’s biggest’ so they like to boast has said that this is normal settlement and refused to help us further. We have since found from research that inferior quality foam will often do this. So beware what you buy and from who!
We have since gone to the expense of replacing the mattress with a more traditional one – and have this time bought from a reputable retailer and the mattress made by a long standing company.

The manufacturer replaced it three months ago but it is already dipping severely like the last one. I’ve been in touch with the manufacturer and been told it’s “normal settling” and that the new mattress doesn’t carry its own warrantee but continues from the old one. I’m getting rid of it and going back to a decent Ortho mattress ASAP.

I actually phoned the manufacturer to question what it is actually made from and I was told that it was Totally 100% a NON natural product and it was made 100% of chemicals. Basically its combusted liquid. I was concerned because of the odur that did not go away after 2 months and I had a fatigue more so than normal. Looking on the internet a few others share my concerns. Anyway back to a Pocketed spring one for me.

There is no evidence that memory foam causes cancer to date. But it is an oil based product and its health affects haven’t bee fully researched. Some people who have slept on memory foam have reported coughing and swollen eyes etc but most people seem to report a comfortable nights sleep. It does undoubtably give off some chemical odour but if the room is well aired it wouldn’t bother me that much.

As for health benefits. Well there is no scientific evidence that memory foam beds are good for your back but there has been little research so far. Research has shown that a medium firm mattress is best because too firm and it causes too much pressure on parts of the body and too soft and you may end up sleeping with a curved spine. Some people have reported incresead back pain from sleeping on memory foam whilst others have reported less pain. I would have thought if you were going to purchase a memory foam mattress it would be better to go for quality and get the densest firmest mattress that you can.

Some more disadvantages for some people have been that they feel to hot, are too supportive so people don’t turn over often enough in their sleep and that they can get stuck in their own indents making it more difficult to turn over. But many people are happy with them so in the absense of research all you can do is ignore the claims and try it for yourself. Expensive though.

We bought our memory foam mattress and Divan set from a leading UK supplier ‘britains leading bed specialist’ – we opted for a near top-of-range model called Belgravia and the total cost was nearly £1000 after discounts. We soon got use to the comfort offered by this product and absolutely loved it to start with. We both slep very well, and the back pain I had been suffering on waking was gone. After about 6 months of use two sags had developed and a ridge formed in the middle. This was not really a problem though, but a bit surprising as neither of us are very heavy 60 & 65 kg. Rotating the mattress did not resolve this. After about 18 months of use I am now finding that the bed does not offer good back support and I am waking up with agonising back pain. Sometimes I wake in the night with back pain then I have to move my self over to the ridge in the middle or towards the edge of the bed to get better support. We have just been on holiday for 2 weeks, and I slept perfectly on a basic sprung mattress with no hint of any back pain at all. Back at home now and I am suffering again with backpain on waking which takes an hour or so to pass. My conclusion? Even an expensive memory foam mattress which may offer good support to start with will eventually change shape so that you end up sleeping with a curved spine which may lead to back pain. I will go back to the store where I purchased it today, but I am not confident that I will get this resolved.

Aj – Memory foam is 100% a NON natural product? No! Unlike pocketed spring mattresses, of course, which are made out of sticks and hay! Chemicals are everywhere and almost impossible to avoid – food, cleaning products, pollution, electromagnetic radiation poisoning..my parents turn their router off when they are not using it thinking they’ll avoid brain tumours better than the next man despite the fact they smoke and that my computer detects four other routers with medium signal strength in neighbouring houses that our neughbours leave on all day.. Don;tbe paranoid, you may be right about memory foam giving off dangerous chemicals but you can’t avoid carcinogens these days.

As for the ebay cheap versions of memory foam mattresses – does anyone have any personal experience of buying these? I only ask because all of the feedback left for sellers will have been left within a couple of weeks of purchase most likely so this tells me nothing about the long term potential of these mattresses.

    Gracie mucho,

Purchased the same mattress – Belgravia – as Martin #49 in January 2008. I would agree with you that as a fellow back pain sufferer, at first it was very well supporting but has gradually failed to leave me waking up pain free. Have contemplated turning it over as the memory foam is just on the top but not tried it yet. Will be contacting the supplier too.

    Hi!

I’ve bought a foam mattress from Dreams (Readymatt).

The bad smell persists after four weeks. I am concerned about the chemicals of this mattress and the risk of cancer.

We have a memory foam topped mattress bought from Dreams which also has 2 big dips and a lump in the middle which started when it was only 3 months old, it is now 9 months old, we have had 2 people employed by dreams come to look at it & dreams say that it is ‘natural settlement’. Dreams refuse to change the mattress even though it is very uncomfortable to sleep on. Does anyone have any ideas where to go now or what to do

I have just bought a memory foam mattress for my double bed (from Carpetright) and also one for my son’s single bed (from Dreams)
My son’s mattress has never had a nasty smell but the double mattress has an overpowering chemical smell despite leaving it to air fro 2 days now.
After reading about the toxins in theses mattresses on the internet I am worried about cancer

I bought the memory foam mattress from walmart 2 years ago it was 150 at the time for a queen bed think it’s up to 180 now not a topper a full 8 inch mattress. No complains about it but seems it will start sinking in a year no back problems or side sleeping issues tempurpedic cost 10 times more I would not mind changing this mattress 10 times in the next 30 years for 1500 to 1800 compared to 3000 tempurpedic

If you are looking for the best quality memory foam mattress at factory prices you should visit http://www.lionmattresses.co.uk.

They specialise in memory foam mattresses and have now launched a new range of Laytec products – which offers the comfort and feel of latex with the added benefit of memory foam body moudling.

All of their mattresses are hand made in their factory in the UK, we have purchased several of their mattresses and toppers which all come with free next day delivery. They also guve as standard a 5 year guarantee on all of their products.

Their are a very helpful family run business who managed to get two mattresses to us within 2 hours from ordering. Really helped out as we just moved into our new house and at the last minute had family to stay.

I am 6’02″ and around 18stone, my wife is 5’5″ and around 8 stone – we have never had any problems with mattresses sinking on either side and havent found we overheat in any season.

    Definitely worth a look.

I bought a memory foam mattress from Carpetright and found it gave off a chemical smell from the day I bought it. I complained to the shop the next day and was told that the smell was not uncommon and may go away in a month if kept in a well aired room. The smell is so bad that the bed cannot be used. A month has now passed and the smell has not disappeared. I have found the after sales service to be non existant and just keep putting me off. I have been told by the salesman at the shop that he has had no other complaints of this nature even though I have read of someone having experienced this problem on this forum. I have asked for written confirmation that the fumes emanating from the foam are non toxic but Carpetright have refused to do so which makes me even more concerned!! I would appreciate it if anyone experiencing this problem would get in touch.

The reason the mattress is releasing a smell should be nothing to do with the foam, it is likely that the memory foam layer has been glued to high density base layer and the product has been vaccum packed before the smell of the glue has been able to dissipate. (thus laying in the packaging for months with the smell locked in)

You firstly need to establish from Carpetright who the manufacturer of the product is -Carpetright do not manufacture mattress products, as i understand they are just an agent so you first port of call is to find out who made it.

It is likely that it has been made with a solvent based glue which is the reason you have the smell, we convert memory foam on a daily basis and we have no smell from the raw material – the only time you get a smell is when they are glued.

In theory if you were to leave the product outside for a few hours the smell should go (Dependant on how long it had been packaged like it) – in addition even if it has been made with a solvent based glue it should be inert when dried and as such not toxic (however i cannot make any guarantee as i do not know what it has been glued with)

Usually even solvent based glues are non toxic when dry and as such fit for mattress making.

We have heard similar experiences, but these largely come from people who have purchased cheaper imported products which do not meed strict UK regulations.

The foam itself should not be producing this smell
    .
I would be happy to chat further with you.

Anyone ever tried a coolmax memory foam mattress? They have a special fabric which cools you down as you sleep, it has a more technical explanation, but basically, you don’t sweat through the night and wake up cool! I recommend checking them out.
