Earlier today I was thinking that I really need to start sharing more stupid ideas
, well remember in the old when Log spamming had 2 benefits
1) open logs you got backlinks from ![]()
2) send enough fake referrers and the site owner would come and see what you had said or why you where linking to them ![]()
Enter 2009 and I and I had a light bulb moment, I was just checking a 404 error page report for a client, I then jumped over to Googles Webmaster Console to see if any Backlinks where pointing to the 404 pages, then I began to wonder how many other seo / webmasters do the same thing day after day.
Then I thought what if I just linked to a few people on pages that don’t exist that would show up in their WMC they would see the links pointing at a 404, then they would either
a) They just ignore me.
b) They at least click once to see what I had said about them, at least the landing page would tell them who I am.
c) They would contact me to get the link fixed, opening up the opportunity to make friends ![]()

Nice idea, but would they still be friends when you didn’t fix the link for them?

Meh, your lack of AJAX and rounded corners in this solution means I’m going to have to revoke its web 2.0 status

I love little things like that Dave. I was doing some link-spankage on moneysupermarket’s backlinks once and I emailed this guy. He came back with “If you’re another one of those SEO people it’s a £100 a month – I get loads of you hassling me”. Moral of the story? If you’re selling advertising – makesure you link to the big boys.

This is just too bizarre. You think that by tricking someone then they will be your friend? I’m rather confused.

You are an evil genius. I like it… Thanks. I couldn’t be bothered actually doing any of this myself, heh… But I like that you thought of this and blogged it. Nice one.
