Link Building Etiquette
There’s been many blog about how laborious link building can be.
Personally, the essential drilling down of websites to explore their levels of authority and deem if they are a viable linking partner I find interesting.
You could literally spend a lifetime building links and still have a feeling in the back of your mind as to how these links are helping with your sites promotion.
In an age were email spam is rife and your filtered inbox is hotter than the inside of a dragon’s nasal passage what’s the most polite and effective way to obtain links?
I’ve recently had a link request from a guy saying:
” Hi there,
My name is*******, I’m Development Manager for *******(http://www.******) I’ve been digging around a few websites over the past few days and I found your site ****** I’ve had a quick look around and I like what you’re saying. I was wondering if you might consider visiting our site and linking to us. (If you like what you see? Here’s the link: *******)
If you’re interested, it would be really great if you could let me know. If it doesn’t seem like your cup of tea (coffee, herbal beverage) you can just send me an email back with “NO” in the subject line and I won’t harass you again
Thanks for your time!
Kind Regards “
Now I kind of like this persons approach, friendly, unique and I’m unlikely to just delete the email.
What do you all consider the best approach for gaining links, well asking for them? How would you go about it?

http://www.thecommonsensemarketer.comYou scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours. Do something for the person you want a link from, and then ask for one back after.

just had this one ..
Hi,
I’m the webmaster of sitename. I’m currently looking for quality websites to link to our site. Would it be possible for you to place a link on your website to sitename ?
In exchange we would be willing to either add a link to your site from our network of quality, high-ranking websites or alternatively we would be willing to pay you for the link to our site.
Is this something you would be interested in?
Best Regards

http://www.seovacancies.co.ukHi,
On the subject of link building I wanted to ask your opinion on the best way forward for us….
We are currently working on seovacancies.co.uk after identiyfing (imho) a lack of resource for SEO professionals and associated staff to search for SEO vacancies. The site is live but I use the term very loosely as there is no logo and the basic job board software is still being configured and the site designed to make it more pleasing to the eye.
An SEO job board that doesn’t rank well is not going to be attractive to employers and agencies so I know we have to look at SEO straight away – I believe link exchange is a good place to start?
Other than asking for the obvious link from this site (hint hint); could you give me your advice on the best way to approach other websites and ask for a link? The comment by Pete W is a good one but to be honest I am struggling to see what we could offer somebody in return for a link other than the obvious; ie a place where the sites visitors can go to find work.
Your opinions would be appreciated.

http://www.brightblackinternet.comI think the subject line of the email is important too – if it looks like a copy and paiste or automated they get deleted without being read so that also has to be just right – eg. “link request from blahblah.com – The Blah Site” and not just “link exchange”
I tend to write mine very much along the same lines as the one Dan posted above – and it works 90% of the time

Forget that, I get straight to the point and offer them money, a sponsorship with a prize give away, or something of value that just happens to come along with a link. I don’t have time or the patience to link beg. If there is someplace where I REALLY want a link that can’t be bought or bribed, then I make friends and figure out what they normally link to. If after making friends I create such content there is a 50% of a link somewhere in there.

http://www.johnschuster.net/I would recommend linking to the site before you contact the web master or offer some kind of incentive so that they can see you are serious.

http://www.seminc.comI don’t know why people don’t pick up the phone more often. I have my link guys go through check the backlinks of my client’s top competitors via Y! and call them to get a link. Email is just not as effective as dialing a few numbers and talking to an actual person. Its just so more effective.

http://www.webster-marketing.comYeah, nothing says, “I’m not spam” like the human voice. I never thought I’d see the day when telemarketing was the non-spammy way of doing something. How times change.

Dave you always on topic as usual, must be ESP…
I just got all my forum pages out of supplemenatry, after 3 months of adrious work.
And no thanks to you! I never got a nofollow link from you for the forum…
I did get nofollow links from you fo my Troll, but I do not think he needs any attention.
He is just loved by everyone.
Anyway I was going to tell you about your sidebard bug, but you figured it out foryouself.
First I was not sure if it was a bug or you doing Randa stand against nofollow…
Anyway it was kind a weird to find my signiture on all your pages when I did a search for it, even when I did not comment on them…
Maybe I should ask Google for a url removal…being that my name is being used without my premision. Ha, Ha…just a joke!
Okay how about some royality for using the Infamous Troll…Ney!
Just buy me a beer when you see me.
Okay, time to troll seomoz rand must be lonely…

http://www.homeandgardengifts.co.ukI hate link building; I have finally nailed my self to the desk and getting on with it. I was told at SES London that’s what’s wrong with my site.
I must admit I do find it hard to come up with something good to go into the subject bar.
I do have a good site with lots of products so that helps once I can get someone to look at the site.
I am also concerned that I was a PR5 until Google played with the way they look at paid links recently and then I dropped to a Pr 4 and the only thing I have ever paid for is to join trade associations and they link back. So I hope that this link building campaign will be ok.

http://www.goatsmilktavern.comWhen I started my link building campaign I was using an automated service, and I had about a 10% success rate and all the sites that accepted my automated request had a PR of 0. Now that I take the time to examine the site and send a personal email, my success rate is much higher. A personal approach, combined with a bit of flattery can go a long way. It always helps to take the time to ask for the link.

Hey guys it is not about link building but brand building.
It is like the body builders pump heavy weight to inflate their muscles just to wathc them shrink down a few weeks later.
The right way to do it which is long lasting is like a professional athlete way…keep going at it so people really are aware of your brand.

http://www.212articles.comwell as far as the perfect subject line for Reciprocal LInking is concerned well … you can never be too sure that this statement would work or that would work….
Alot depends on the nature of the other person and the state of mind that those person is in …
I would suggest though this is quite significant .. but one should not consider this as only option … keep on working on other methods of generating backlinks ..
like submitting articles, freebies , social networking, forum or blog comments, submissions … etc …
and in the mean time … work on this and don’t let this discourage you guys …. as you have to set practical goals … that you will not get the link back in your first email…
However, a good alternative to email is .. a phone call .. this will speed up the process and will either help you get the link or not …. now how to get the number is easy … if its not on the website contact us .. then check the whois of the website … i think this might help …..
Regards,
Mark
