HTC Diamond or Samsung F480 Tocco

HTC Diamond or Samsung F480 Tocco

With the onslaught of mobile phones flooding the market nowadays, it’s becoming more difficult to choose the phone that is right for you or in my case for my wife. I have narrowed it down to three possibilities so far, these are - The HTC Touch Diamond, Samsung U900 Soul and the Samsung F480 Tocco.

All three of the phones have fairly similar specs and all feature HSDPA for super fast internet connection. The HTC Touch Diamond is the only one with WiFi and Windows Mobile 6.1 capabilities, which is swaying me a little, but the Samsung’s both have 5 mega-pixel cameras compared to the HTC Touch Diamond’s 3.2 mega pixels.

The HTC Touch Diamond has an internal memory of 4GB, but both the Samsung phones can be upgraded to 8GB using the integrated microSD card slots. The Touch Diamond and the Samsung F480 both feature 2.8 inch touchscreens, and all of the phones have the normal Bluetooth connectivity and MP3/Video playback. So you see I’m in a bit of a conundrum, does a phone really need all those features? Maybe I should just let my wife decide. What do you think, which one would you choose?

Dave

I’m sticking with Windows Mobile (not to sure why though), so I’m waiting for the Diamond. But I hear that there is a version following on from it a few months later (the touch pro) with a slide out keyboard, choices choices!

Get the HTC Diamond… why? because its ultra chic!

One of the slimmest winmo’s out there.

Here in Holland its already available. It has its flaws though, some sluggishness with the old rom, memory leaks, poor battery life, etc. But thats with almost all winmo device’s. But the Diamond is a true beauty, it’s even more stylish than the iphone (especially the new 16gb 3G version with the white back).

you can’t go wrong with it, besides they say that diamonds are a girls best friend ;)

Do any of you know of a WiMax antenna that can be hooked up to these? Wifi is good, but WiMax would be a good addition. Just like WiFi, with the option to shut it off to not crush the battery.

I assume the WiMax doesn´t come standard at this point on any phone.

Get the HTC Diamond, i have an old htc and its still going fine, never had a problem with it. going to upgrade in september to a new one

When choosing a phone it is important to decide what you acutally need it for. Do you want it to look good, impress, have features or be affordable. It’s pointless to buy something with lots of features if you never use them. Why have an iphone if you’re never going to listen to music on it, watch videos or play games. You might aswell get a phone at 80% of the cost.

Hi, I bought an HTC Touch 6 months ago and despite this phone being perfect in hand and looks great I’m looking to change it because it’s slow and the touch screen is scratched. I’m considering the F480 or the Diamond but not sure if those two will improve compare to the one I already have.

The F480 is a great phone - With fantastic picture capability.

I’ve looked at these phones in the search for a new mobile myself and have settled on the Tocco for it’s features and look. I looked into several professional and gadget reviews for them and the Tocco always comes out on top. THe problem with the HTC is it always comes out as crap and the touch technology and i’ve seen a few of these reviews also say, whatever you do, do NOT by the HTC! So i’m going with Tocco all the way, it’s being delvered tomorrow.

Funnily enough I’ve got a Tocco (Vodafone F480v) and Touch Diamond (unbranded HTC) here now in front of me and my wise words are thus:

    The Tocco is AWFUL.

It’s going to Cex tomorrow for a trade-in.

The Diamond is slicker, better screen (QVGA vs VGA, better user interface, better file manager, INFINITELY better browser, better email capability, smaller, WIFI, more applications available, GPS.

Oh, and a MUCH more responsive touchscreen.

Pete, I can tell you hand on heart that you have made a bad decision going for the Tocco instead of the Diamond. I bought the Tocco for my Fiance thinking she’s like it as she’s really into Samsungs but she despised everything about it. I used it for TWO DAYS whilst deliberating over selling my Diamond to recoup some losses and I’m not kidding you I was CLAMOURING for my Diamond back with its razor-sharp screen, sexy looks and overall functionality.

There really is no comparison here. GOD knows what market the Tocco is aimed at, and Lord knows what reviews you were reading to make your decision: they should be shot!

Leon, I agee with you. Peter I read the ‘great’ reviews on Tocco and then got one on Orange. It’s hideous! Impossible to text, let alone text fast. Difficult to scroll through menu’s. Not particularly responsive. The only thing is that it looks good!
I sent it back within 3 days.
If you do not text or use your phone a lot and generally just prefer the aesthetics then the Tocco could be for you, but for anyone who relies on their phone it’s a complete waste of time!

I’m thinking of getting myself a Touch Diamond but also enjoy using the qwerty keyboard of my Tytn II. Can texts be written in landscape, with a larger easier to use virtual keyboard. not too sure if I should hold out for the Touch Pro (Release date not known).

Um..very useful advice there guys and gals.. I myself am thinking of getting either the Tocco or the HTC Diamond and I’m not too sure.
At the end of the day it’s all down to what you will be using it for and how you carry it around. I think the Tocco is smaller but it sounds a bit “cheap” from what I hear, and the Diamond is bulky like the iPhone.. So I think I’ll wait for the right WM6 mobile that’s small and cool and I’ll stick with my SE K800i… thanks for sharing. A

  22. 22. Paulo | August 6th 2008 @ 10:20 pm

No comparison.. Ive tried all 3 phones. The HTC is heaps better for capability. If you want simplicity get the soul. The Tocco is a great little phone but the contact scrolling is nearly impossible and frustrating and the 5Mp camera quality is suspect.. most pics lack clarity. Its lacking in some areas .The soul has a good 5Mp camera. The HTC camera is 3.2Mp but is crystal clear (ever in the half light).. but it has no flash tho. Be aware the new Samsung Omnia is coming out this month.. does everything the HTC does with a full 5Mp flash camera..!

  23. 23. Paulo | August 6th 2008 @ 10:22 pm

Just seen you comment re the HTC being bulky.. in the flesh its far from bulky and quite a bit smaler than the iphone (its also very light)..

  24. 24. DaveN | August 7th 2008 @ 8:27 am

Diamond is bulky like the iPhone.. no way it’s light and slim.. the htc diamond pro is bulky the one with the keyboard

  25. 25. Pete | August 11th 2008 @ 2:55 pm

Hey..interesting debate, swaying one way then the next. Let me add my 2 pennyworth. I have a Samsung Tocco, but have a business credit to buy another phone and was looking at the HTC Touch Diamond.
The Tocco is indeed the most attractive phone I have ever had (and I have had a few, I am nothing but a moby slut). But as mentioned above, scrolling through your phonebook is a nightmare not too mention your texts. My texting takes twice as long because you keep hitting the language selection key. Web browsing keeps losing connection and doesn’t like some pages. The activate screen button at the top of the phone has to be pressed in a certain way and can be frustrating if you don’t get it right.
All in all the phone is loveley, but if you have anything but very slim delicate fingers, you will have trouble with it. Once you are used to all the fancy bits and bobs, the widgets, the vibra-touch ect, you are back to judging it as a phone, and it isn’t very user friendly. I think I am going to get the Diamond.
