How to Get Links – Wikipedia

by

Whether or not you believe in having links in Wikipedia, It’s always nice to have a tip.

Nofollow links can play a little in search ranking, we have all seen test’s where Bloggers have signed Blogs, with an obscure anchor texts and these Blogs had nofollow’s and the target site ranks for these obscure terms now.

Ok that’s on Blogs what about the Wiki, Ok here is my Tip.

Lets take Seomoz ( link to keep Rand happy, because I’m using him as an example ;) ), say Rand was my biggest competitor in the blogsphere, we had similar content and similar goals, But he had been busy in the Wiki and I hadn’t …

ok go to this page in wiki this will show you all Rands back links from the wiki.

here’s one on Vanessa Fox Ok If seomoz is my Competitor shouldn’t i get in touch with Vanessa and get an interview about her new job and get my wiki link ??

or the pagerank one or the .. it goes on and on, Now I used Rand as an example but I should have checked all my competitors, and just made a list of articles to write.

We’ve just got our first wikipedia link…haven’t noticed any SERPS benefits but it does send a modest amount of traffic. Certainly miles more than a lot of well known directories.

“Nofollow links can play a little in search ranking, we have all seen test’s where Bloggers have signed Blogs, with an obscure anchor texts and these Blogs had nofollow’s and the target site ranks for these obscure terms now.”

You need to recheck that, because it’s not correct. You’re probably talking about:
    http://dallas-seo.blogspot.com/2006/11/nofollow-does-it-really-work-like.html
But if you do the query http://www.google.com/search?q=%22mark+warranty+peterson%22&num=50&hl=en&lr=&safe=off&filter=0 now you don’t see theautoclub.com show up — you only see other posts where the guy actually used that phrase.

Don’t believe me? Check it by doing a nofollow link with obscure anchortext to an obscure page, and see for yourself. :)

Matt, thanks for clearing that up, just had a thread about it in GWHG. I like the test it yourself answer, as it was what I came up with.

Okay to test what Matt has said I have signed this post with a unique signature.

I believe a search for that phrase will bring up this page, unless, “Google does not like me!”

The reason that Matt’s hypotheses is not valid, is that if one is to sign a Web page many times or a blog on a particular domain, that phrase is duplicated and diluted.

So, if the owner of this blog allows me some leniency to test my theory this issue can be proven or disproven and resolved once and for all.

By far the best way to get a link into Wikipedia is to have content of unique value to the encyclopedia. Can your site act as a reliable source on a topic, one of the five or ten most solid possible references on the subject on the Web? Then it will help Wikipedia.

I strongly recommend Durova’s guide to adding links to your own content.

It’s not a hypothesis. Matt stated a fact. And what does phrase dilution have to do with the fact that nofollow blocks anchor text? Absolutely nothing.

What Dave talks about used to work. I’ve tested it months ago. That doesn’t mean it works now.

I half to agree with Halfdeck. The post that Matt Cutts referenced was a test that I had done at the end of 2006. One of the things I regret the most is that I linked to the SERPs instead of a screen shot of the SERPs at the time that I referenced them. At that time, in 2006 my results were valid. Is it still so now? Probably not now that G has had time to see what happened and change their algo so I doubt we will see much of the nofollow link juice getting the anchor text value that we used to.

I do think that it is important to follow Dave’s advice on getting links in Wiki regardless of the nofollow tag due to the traffic that can come from a Wiki link.

you have to post article in Wiki to get links. well we cannot say that there is no use of nofollow link because, it is increasing visitors traffic to website.

My third biggest traffic source is wiki so who cares about the no follow?! I don’t even know how the links appeared coz i didn’t do them!? It all comes down to site content. If you’ve got something original and relevant it will gather links on it’s own.

    Dear DaveN,

Nice post in a way that you have started this disucssion on the need & significance of having the no follow links. Though we didn’t get much info on that …. but still the Semoz refernce post was quite interesting and the statistics were all carefully gathered …

No follow links are still beneficials for two facts … if they are coming from a great source “Wiki is one” which recieves tons of traffic on daily basis then its good … it will give your site great value & authority in your niche if “Wiki” has your reference …

And as far as getting a link from Wiki is concerned …. I agree with “David Gerard” that you site has to be an authority in the subject for “Wiki” to find it usefull for them.

Anyways Keep up the good wrok… Awaiting your new informative posts.

Very nice and interesting post. But it stiil seems very difficult to have an inbound link from wikiepdia, since human editors control who gets listed.

Quite informative from the various posters. Although i offer relative content through my blog, is there anyway of informing the specific wiki of my article and submitting it to wikiepedia as a reference link?

I’d like to upload images of our equipment to Wikimedia Commons and then put them into the relevant Wikipedia articles. However I’d like rather to point to the images on our site than to upload it from the hard drive. They used to allow this, did they stop doing so?

And how about uploading picks directly to Wikipedia, anyone knows if it is possible?
