It’s not hard and it’s real easy to follow a few rules isn’t it ?

Don’t add keywords to the field that says Name, use Tom like that guy off myspace if your scared that I might laugh at your name ( to date I haven’t laughed at anyones name) use your online nic’s they are fine too, but cheap loans in south shields is way way out unless you have changed your name by depoll

comment-on-my-blog
No signatures under comments I combine your name and url to make it easy for you and if you are really good you may just get a clean backlink for me

comments-with-links

you can clearly see that Becky is getting links from me, she hasn’t paid anything other than not been a dick on my blog, she has not come from the comment hunter type websites and she hasn’t dropped links all over the place, her ip’s stays pretty static , but that DaveN character well he is a dick on this blog, he has come from a bad proxy he dropped links, but he will get another chance as all do on my blog

so what can you do :

Relevant links in the body of a comment can contain anchor text  links but I will judge you on those links and may be in an bad mood and remove all your links from my blog

other SEO agencies if you’re here to drop links to your clients I think it’s fair game to be an arse.

Added how not to comment on my blog :

a  IP address and keyword names

spam

I shall start posting more often now, I was always unsure if you would mock my name!

The fact you have had a need to write this post suggests some really underhanded activity is taking place. We all probably knew that was the case before but it is rarely highlighted in this manner. Well done for doing so. As a business and website owner it is frustrating to be on the receiving end of a large number of clearly amateur “SEO specialists and companies”. More so as we do most of it in house.
We all know that we need links and the value of them but whilst it is the hardest of the SEO tasks to do and to get right, surely it’s worth that little bit of extra effort. I imagine that doing it right isn’t much harder than link spamming.

I think more bloggers should take this approach Nick, forcing comments to be genuine rather then people using blogs as a vehical to gain links for their own websites or clients. I saw this link through your Twitter page and it made me chuckle :)

Giving comment on a blog is not easy. The way you’ve written absolutely correct. We should use keyword in the field of name. When we will rite comment, that comment should be related with topic.

    I think I get it:

Greatings fair man, I would take time to comment on your blog. Great interesting, I will follow to future: cheap loans in south shields

So that would not be a good one then? I wonder if my proxy says I’m a dick.

I think a little tooltip of info bubble containing this policy on all posts might be a good idea (We’re thinking about it).

Hey, I blame Google for all the comment spam. Then again I blame Google for pretty much everything.

Good points. But it’s a real pity that most webmasters are now too afraid to link out because of “PageRank” ;)

    Hey… I didn’t start the craze.

Being from Newcastle (South Shields is on the River Tyne) and also working in SEO it’s interesting to see someone going that niche and dropping comments on a well known SEO blog.

Would be interesting to see which SEO company up here is that stupid to be honest – it’s like poking the sleeping bear.

“may be in an bad mood and remove all your links from my blog”

I’ve been here with my blog. It got so frustrating I turned off comments for a few weeks, but hated that too. In the end, I still can’t fathom why some days, I get good, helpful comments and then other days I get nothing but spam.

Why do I have to write my name, when I don’t want my name asociated to my website? OK, I admit in the past I’ve been guilty of putting keywords in the name, but they’re only the keywords that are in my domain name – no more and no less. If I don’t want my real name to be in the public eye, surely I can at least write “Great Lisbon Apartments” as my name?

Why do I have to write my name, when I don’t want my name associated to my website?

More to the point why do you have to drop your website url on my blog if you don’t want it associated with your name?

I wote my comment after a few drinks and hadn’t thought my argument through. It’s your blog and your rules, and I will abide by them, but I think there’s an appreciable difference between “cheap loans in south shields” and simply reproducing the domain name words.

Considering the recent post by Google about Comment Spam and how much it really affects rankings…

    http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2009/11/hard-facts-about-comment-spam.html

It really makes you wonder if we should go as far as to STOP approving comments from sites not within the same community or niche as we are too. I mean that would be kind of like sculpting the link juice we give and receive.

By that I mean not letting lawyers and real estate sites get a link, but letting other sites that are related to my niche get a link…

The funny thing is I imagine it won’t be long before some spammer actually comes along and does the opposit to all the rules Dave has said and posts a comment in this thread.

Great policy Dave. Comment spam is crap. Matt McGee also has a comment policy that has been out since 05/2008 that is a little clearer, but along the same lines. He even has a plug-in to help with this.
