I guess most SEO’s will have been happily preparing for this day to come and if you haven’t don’t worry too much I’m sure you’ll figure it out. For the past few months we have seen I guess what can only be called a non-geo vince data ( btw vince or brand update take your pick) appearing in the UK Serps. At least they gave us a heads up this time.
So how will it make our jobs easier? In the past if you wanted to rank it was necessary to land grab has many links has possible and have good OPIC score. Well Google seems to be now allowing “authority websites” to rank top for high value keyterms that aren’t in their backlink profiles or at least not a major %. Any ways I was chatting to Greg Boser a few months back and we are in agreement that now is the time to shine in the SEO world as crappy link builders and low quality links will fall by the wayside and drag a few sites down I’m sure.
So the million dollar questions .. how do you
a) Become Brand
b) Become Authority
c) tell Google that you are an authority brand ![]()
well tbh I have given enough clues recently on external interviews and on webmaster radio.. so you work it out
haha

I have absolutly no idea what an OPIC score is. I guess it’s about trust, but I haven’t come across that one before.
If someone could enlighten me then that would be good

I listen to Strike Point this morning on my way to work in the car (I just got a new Audi, very happy with it and its super cool cos the media system takes CD cards, perfect for WMR). Interesting comments about Google potentially moving more towards a citation engine i.e. link or mentions even if the links are in JS or 302′d Google can still figure and should pass citation. Listen to the other half on the way home but where I can perhaps see Google starting to place some weighting in their SERPS and in regerence to branding is in actual mentions of brand names. There is a great tool out there which I saw on Mashable called trendrr (look it up). Basically it monitors buzz on a number of sites based on Brand name mentions. So Mr Naylor for example could set it up to monitor “DaveN” and it would chart and trend mentioned or buzz over the sites you ask it to monitor. Only sites who have “brands” would have this “buzz” so perhaps this is something Google (and others) and considering? Caveat… This is just me thinking our loud / speculating NOT based on fact or testing as TNash recently pondered

Do you think this was tied in with the smaller links under results in the serps?

Yer come on Dave some pointers needed. You cannot leave us scratching around for these! I have just had to type ‘david naylor interview’ into Google – this search frequency metric will sure help brand David Naylor!

I thought Vince was widely acknowledged as NOT being a brand update as this was just a pseudo side effect of trustrank being remodulated (how startrek) and that the recent changes to NOFOLLOW means that the juice/pr of all sites have had to be recalculated resulting in the recent shifts in SERPS?

hmm.. but isnt that the same as trust and authority in terms of IBL’s ?

Just saying… WordPress plugins… Just saying

Oh I only just found this blog post. I was aware of the branding thing, but not that there was a way we could influence it.
Could we have some pointers to the pointers please?!

The only problem I see with this is I often don’t want to see the authority brand when searching. For example, when I search for something Adobe or PDF related, I know who Adobe is, I don’t want to see Adobe listed at the top. I want to see the lesser known plugins, apps, and other things related to PDF technology.

I did not spam my link there. It appears either someone else is spamming my link or wordpress has taken up a mind of its own. Some auto feature or something
Apologies… - 20
I thought Matt Cutts says Google treats all websites equally.

Prey tell, (bar WMR), what external interviews might those be Mr Naylor?
