Google Starts Showing “Latest Posts” In Sidebar
This morning we spotted that when searching for ”gmail” in Google we got this:
This also appears for the term “mashable”:

We’re also seeing it for the search “google.com” – but not “google”. We’ve searched a number of brands, but not seen anything yet – perhaps it is triggered by search volume or maybe it is just being tested on these terms, we don’t know.
It could have an effect on AdWords, but it also could mean another way of brands protecting themselves.

http://www.djb31st.co.ukBe interesting to see how far they take this..
It ties in well with something i read the other day of Google pushing g+ more than adverts.
Be interesting to see how well Google does with working out the difference between a brand name and a keyword based brand name like “wooden furniture store”

http://twitter.com/mikullaI’m seeing this for certain brands too.
Check a few SEO industry peeps. Search Engine Land latest posts popped up. Couldn’t get anything else to show but I’ll keep trying.

Searching for brands I know have a G+ page while logged in to an account associated with G+ returns these results for some brands (mashable and SEL) but running the same searches while logged in to an account that hasn’t been associated shows them for many more brands, with a notice at the top “temporary preview upgrade to GooglePlus account”. Seems like the way things are going in the long run, but the short term might just be a heavy push for G+.

http://www.rankgiant.comGoogle really seems to be changing their entire search “game plan”.
Check out this link from WSJ (I hope links in comments are okay): http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304459804577281842851136290.html?mod=WSJ_hp_LEFTWhatsNewsCollection
To sum up what is said in that article:
“* Over the next few months, Google’s search engine will begin spitting out more than a list of blue Web links. It will also present more facts and direct answers to queries at the top of the search-results page.
* The changes to search are among the biggest in the company’s history and could affect millions of websites that rely on Google’s current page-ranking results. At the same time, they could give Google more ways to serve up advertisements.
* The company is aiming to provide more relevant results by incorporating technology called “semantic search,” which refers to the process of understanding the actual meaning of words.
* Semantic search can help associate different words with one another, such as a company (Google) with its founders ( Larry Page and Sergey Brin).
* Google search will look more like “how humans understand the world,
* To provide answers that aren’t already in Google’s ever-expanding database, the company will blend new semantic-search technology with its current system to better recognize the value of information on websites and figure out which ones to show in search results. It would do so by examining a Web page and identifying information about specific entities referenced on it, rather than only look for keywords.
* This move could spur millions of websites to retool their Web page—by changing what’s called a “markup language”—so the search engine could more easily locate them under the new system.
* The shift to semantic search could directly impact the search results for 10% to 20% of all search queries, or tens of billions per month.”
Tweaking the algo, changing the results page, messing with EVERYTHING! It’s enough to make my head spin.
