Google poised for Postini

Right, i’ve now decided not to put any items on ebay anymore and just ring up Google instead.

They are obviously looking to buy something useful.

Eric Shmidt (good friend of mine) said they had a strategy for “search, ads and apps”. Postini is a private company whose products give more control in terms of spam and viruses allowing monitoring and email preservation - meaning companies can remain compliant with regulations.

The Google apps suite is looking more like a front runner every day; companies faced with a average bill of $225 a person for MS Office could well welcome an online alternative.

Personally, I well remember aspects of earlier Exchange versions and how difficult they were to maintain - often having to do offline backups and any database work out of hours to maintain business continuity- Ok, so the Google purchase remains just that, but will it be too difficult to sway major corporations into an online secure mail option?

It would have to be extremely cheap for them to cross over. Maybe with a promotion similar to what they’re doing with GCheckout. I wonder if Google’s corporate email is run on Google Apps. Would be kind of hypocritical if they were pushing other companies to move over their emails when they don’t use the service themselves!

I think this goes to show the importance of online security. Now Google will be able to market their Gmail brand to more businesses because of the added security it will have because of Postini.
