Stop your frickin moaning and get on with your Job !!
Maybe it’s my age, maybe it was the Google Coolaid I drank, maybe it’s because I have looked at Google and thought they have so many Cool products, why do people beat on them so much..
So what’s the real issue, is it that the products are crap, the fact that they buy everything in their path or the fact that they can make you or break you, and that’s really what scares the crap out of you.
lets look at :
Adwords people bitched about smart pricing because of higher click prices, and people bitched that the arbitrage guys where destroying their market place, that the big industry players could just push the auction price above the little guy. yep all fair points I guess, but in my eyes Google brought out Smart pricing to combat the big boys and the arbitrage boys.
It’s systems not a perfect system, but at present its the best that they can offer you, so lets be happy that there is a PPC model. so that you can launch a New Site and get good traffic very very quickly.
Adsense, ok i’m banned from adsense, so I can’t really tell you if it’s cool or not cool these days, I know it empowered a lot of people to make more money than was ever possible. It also opened the gateway for bad people to make money BUT THAT’S NOT GOOGLES FAULT IT’S THE BAD PEOPLE and they do bad them, and again it’s a system. the best that they can do at the moment but I bet they will keep improving and banning the bad people !
and Finally :
Search Buying links lets face facts you are trying to mess with Google, so don’t get all pissy when they mess with you , when a site that is breaking the rules you bitch because it’s ranking and you bitch if people report sites for spamming the index, just for record I travelled to Redmond to give a speech on search spam amongst other things…
So the next time you want to bitch about Google think about life If MICROSOFT WAS YOUR ONLY OPTION.. and for the record I still believe that day will come :)

off to moan about Google now …

Well said. I love it when those who once bowed at the Google alter turn to bite the hand that fed them once they get caught doing something that is considered wrong in the eyes of Google.
Basically, people are never happy and will always find a reason to bitch about something. Glad it’s them and not me.
So, Google isn’t Evil, It’s just business…
Adwords - G had to create a business advantage so they figured out the Quality rank.
Adsense - It’s really not their fault but they’re a major factor in polluting the web (+making tons of money out of it)
Links - Too much $$ spent on links for sites establishment, Google prefers us to rent non organic traffic via their PPC plan…
Knol - If wikipedia can have an almost sure 1st page ranking for every term, Knol might have an almost sure 1st rank on every 1st page :)
If MICROSOFT WAS MY ONLY OPTION - That’s too easy, I would have a lot of spare time when this happens…
so are you implying that you’re a bad person with Adsense?
Gyutae Park i used to be a bad person I built a lot of MFa’s
DaveN
They’re not evil, they just have a morbid way of running things but considering I don’t like people pissing in my back yard…Google is the greatest and I recommend them to everyone. If you want to be successful just focus on Google and master their organic & paid search. Don’t waste your time on anything that isn’t Google…
Cracking post Dave.
I think we are all a little evil ;)
For the record.. I am an equal opportunity basher… he he. Really though, I see a company nothing more, and it would seem that too many people somehow perceive Google as a public service. It might be, but only if that public owns shares :0)
Like any company there are things I admire and enjoy while there are others I may not be all to thrilled about. At the end of the day, Google is a company and lives within those confines. I will run my businesses the way I see fit as can they.
Thanks for the rant… always enjoy them (rants)
Dave
Farmer I disagree with that, I believe that you should monitor all traffic streams and buy, trade, beg and even borrow traffic where ever you can convert it
shhh…that was the point of my comment. ;)
Crap…that wasn’t the point.
HAHAHA
Dave
Fair enough - I think there’s a lot of truth to that. MS is still ages behind G’s UI on most products.
Most of us have a love hate relationship with Goog - and both extremes are quite strong.
Google started to find ways to make money rather then just doing good free stuff =[ and now its on the market its going to be more about the money.
Its the age old problem of once you get to a certain size - people will find ways to drag you down. We love pulling celebrities off pedestals once they get big, the honeymoon period for Google is clearly over, with everyone whinging as much as they did at Microsoft years ago. Pah.
I’m showing this to some folks that I work with. It made their Christmas. :)

@Cutts
I think you’ll find this view is shared by most people, Matt. I know the rules Google wants to play by and it’s up to me if I play by them or not. If I don’t I can expect to get backhanded - fair enough.
I do really think some people forget how much cool stuff Google has brought us and it’s sad to see the the anti-google parade party gathering steam, when a lot of it’s just hot air.
I don’t agree with everything Google does, but I don’t have all the information, so - just keep up the good work :)
Great post, Dave, - I glad to hear someone post something positive.
It’s good as it is but if people wouldn’t moan nothing would ever get better. I guess it’s all about whether criticism is constructive or not and in the case of people criticising Google it’s often subjective and bitter.
Good luck Dave in the new year. I learn from this site and shoemoney.
I am still trying to learn LAMP but when you are getting to 50years it gets harder. All the best.
Kool Aid is with a K not a C ;-)
Google backhands like a girl…
No hard feelings, in fact I almost applied at google in council bluffs but figured I was evil enough and didn’t need anymore evilness. ;)
Cheers mates & Happy Holidays to Dave ‘N Crew…and you to Matt ‘N GooSquad.
I guess It’s wasn’t Koolaid then lol ..

Google’s “do no evil” is picked apart by the broken logic of the IQ-starved, overlooking that ethics starts with giving a damn, and how many companies have a motto that shows they give a damn as much as Google?
Of course bashing Google for linkbait is expected to attract an adolescent level of logic in the comments, but with so many dysfunctional children who never grew up posting out there it does get frustrating wading through the sewer they call their thinking process day in and day out. Kudos to Daven for saying what so many are thinking.
Couldn’t agree more - Google has grown this industry so much we should be thankful; for one its given me great job I enjoy; although we should be never subservient and should question every new G development.
Most online businesses would fall on their arse if G dropped them from the index; if thats the case with your business or a business you look after then play by the rules.
80% (I’ve calculated it) of the time they are excellent, they rest they are average. If only Yahoo! and Live had that ratio!
Google know they are under constant scrutiny however, there’s no reason that they shouldn’t monetise their business they way they have. I don’t think they mind being disliked by some, because in the long run they have a great product. How many of us actually use MSN for searches…
Adwords - they charge too much and ROI is not good enough for certain types of website. Some websites that has very high margins such as car dealers will use it profitably
Adsense - not really that great as a earner, though is just one of many ways to earn money on a blog.
Search - with every system and model there are loop holes for which people would look to take advantage of. There is no perfect system, so the only way Google could rectify things in their eyes to punish those who does not go by their rules.
I simply enjoy the way Google looks at market domination. Since they control 80% of the search market, they work to expand the *entire* market with free, open source projects such as Android. It’s clever, and it works. Hold this up against monopoly-minded corporations who only work to expand their proprietary corner of the market.
Who does not love a good Google rant? I love them and hate them in the same breath. I made a lot more money with the old Google, I dug in and refused to change and things got worse. Now I’ve invested the time and effort to learn how to get results with Google 07 and it’s been well worth it. The mistake I made was to bitch and moan when I should have been prepared to make the changes that had to be made. You need to evolve with this monster or it’s going to eat you alive, and don’t be so depenant on them that an alog change will bring on a breakdown.
I want some of that Coolaid Dave!
Brilliant post.
I’m not a big fan of bitching and moaning either.
Lets just look at what we are working with and deal with it. Things are always going to change and those who change with them will come out on top.
Matt’s speech at Pubcon was really good. I started to have empathy for Google; they are trying to make the best experience for the user, run a business, and provide wealth for their shareholders. Its hard to please everyone.
I think the most of the time I’ve complained about Google it was because it stopped or discounted something I was trying to do or some shortcut I was trying to take.
@graywolf
Koolaid = USA
CoolAid = UK
(;o)
Nice to get Matt Cutts commeneting on your blog.
I have absolutely no problem with google as long as they return valid responses to my searches.
If I’m searching for an easy way to make tuna casserole, I don’t want to come to a MFA site that sells cookbooks, you know?
google is evil, really evil :)
nice post Daven, thx for sharing… and yes, google is NOW evil
Cool post. A bit evil on your part, too. hahaha
Indeed, there are too many tools on Google, they are trying to be Top of the TOP. In fact, they might be, but Google is NOT the most important thing on web’s development!
Big G is a bastard in the industry..they are really stupid ..Me too banned from adsense for the third time..I don’t think Big G will turn back…they a the real evil dave
How did you get banned from AdSense? Just curious. As long as there is a market, there will be folks who will attempt to manipulate that market to put greenbacks in their pocket.
oooh! I think I made my way through the first 25/26 posts of this n then red wine took over. I remember the days of teaching undergrads to explore search engines other than Google and that was back in 2000 - I bet they all use Google now for search which is probably not a good thing, but social networking is probably part of their Internet life as well so there might be still a little bit of balance. I think the moral is that ‘Google is human’ rather than evil. Since coming out of academia into the commercial world I’m compromised as well - its just that when you make that little moral sacrifice you tend to shout all the more loudly about how moral you are. Or ideally, get employeees to do it for you.
And I know that there’s only two e’s in employees - too much wine n time for bed.
Paid links: Yes, yes, yes.
I have been utterly blown away by the number of otherwise intelligent search professionals who seem to think that Google are being unfair with this.
Buying links to affect rankings works, but it is spamming, it is black-hat and it is nothing else.
It is just like complaining because Google are penalising sites which have white text on a white background. I know a lot of people have had their business model severely stung here, but it is far from unreasonable to try and stop webmasters from unreasonably influencing the algorithms.
How much longer will web masters put up with Google competing directly with US by launching or buying nearly every kind of web service we can think of building ourselves?
For example, a friend launched http://www.plurk.com which has gotten madly popular, and I thought it was a great niche not taken over by Google. Then they go and buy http://www.jaiku.com … this scenario is being repeated every few weeks!
The ironic thing is that we web masters and developers are the ones recommending the many free services like Google Apps For Your Domain and Analytics to our clients. We are so slow, so very slow, to realize that we’re aiding a competitor!
This isn’t 2000 any more. They’re biting the hands that fed them. See http://www.google.com/intl/en/options/
