Google Announce Termination Of Products

by

The other day Google announced they are scrapping a number of their products including:

Aardvark – Aard-what?
Desktop – quite interesting as they used to really push this
Fast Flip – Pointless addition to Google Reader, total flop.
Google Maps API for Flash
Google Pack
Google Web Security
Image Labeler
Notebook – I really liked this, I used it to write a book. Fortunately if you do use this your notes will be imported into Google Docs.
Sidewiki – Again this was a bit of a flop.

Some of these products were quite popular at one time, for example I remember downloading the “Google Pack” a while back, but nowadays things are changing and Google are restructuring themselves to give Microsoft a good kick in the teeth with Chrome OS and Google Apps.

Personally I think its great that they scrap the unpopular products and services – many companies refuse to do that and continue regardless.

The only product I really know and sorry a bit is Notebook I also used it but there will be good replacement in google chrome I am pretty sure.

The translation API is useful and it is on the list for ‘kill’ not because people do not use it but as they say ‘abuse it’. I think that is mistake to discontinue such a great tool and people will just hack around their other translation products and continue to use it only now google will not see who do it.

It would be great to have the budget to push out a tool/project and if it is not successful then you move on. Great for Google, they can continue to churn out ideas and some of those will be gems. They will also gain some good insights from all the failures.
