GHD Hair Straighteners

by

GHD Hair Straighteners are made by a company just down the road from me in Leeds and I have to say I feel sorry for them, this story goes back a few years now. First my 13 year old niece purchased a set from what she thought was an Official store and she ended up with fakes! Then I saw a program on the BBC about counterfeits and it featured GHDs mainly because the fake products were dangerous, to be honest I never thought much more about it until Becky wanted some then I started to look into this some more .. what a mine field so I used an authorised comparator for GHD Hair Straighteners but here is the Official GHD Website

But it looks like things have got so bad that GHD have setup a website checker to help customers, but when I looked at Google PPC over 70% were selling fakes and based in China so the chances are you’re not even going to get your Hair Straighteners ! I felt that maybe Google should do something about this I mean :

Ghd-straighteners
OK ukghd, UKghd, ForGHD or ghd4Sale is not a copyright issue but it certainly is against Googles Guidelines :

google

And the organic search results are just as bad, I feel that Google should step up here I know that competitor brand bidding can be a good thing but these things are dangerous at best you will have young girls upset at Christmas because they are fakes or don’t turn up, worse case young girls scarred for life at Christmas because they are faulty! I know Christmas is a little way off, but families will be starting to look at the purchasing options out there.

I guess the only place you can be sure of getting real ones online is from their own website…!

You’re right something should be done about the faulty fakes because if they are as dangerous as they sound they wouldn’t make the best xmas pressie for a loved one.

Agreed Dave. I’ve looked at their listings a few times and Google need to get on to it. Maybe call in ‘Health and Safety’ eh? If someone’s searching for GHD they deserve GHD . . . Fair enough, throw in a few Philips or Niki Clarke listings . . . but fake crap from China? Dangerous, very dangerous!

You could abandon ‘caveat emptor’ and introduce a nanny Google to go alongside our nanny state. Or you could just buy them through a large retailer where there is some redress if you have the slightest problem. I got mine from Amazon….

Don’t they play ‘shops’ in school any more?

This is a problem afecting organic and Paid search, I have a client who built there business through GHDs they had a good relationship with GHD reps and were able to be competitive with prices.

Since then they have had to focus on a new area as the competition for GHDs using fakes looked like his were quite pricey meaning he reduced his costs and barely makes a profit.

GHD are now trying to verify their suppliers but this is easy to replicate and would need the GHD police to vet each listing in the SERPs.

Google needs to sort it as I have seen adsense ads on websites warning about fakes, actually advertising fakes. Fail!

Just attended the A4uexpo seminar where you mentioned the problems with the term ghd in Google results. As a affiliate promoting ghd products, the recent increase in the number of fake sites ranking well is annoying. Most of the them hosted in China – with Chinese back links and outbound links to other fake product websites like Ugg boots.

So glad to see others on this. Couple of points from me:

    1. Have you checked out the “seo” methods that the spam sites are using – blatant paid links, links hidden in frames, links in the same text color as the background, massive amounts of comment spam. Yet they are outranking EVERYONE except for ghd themselves. Aren’t Google meant to be able to “detect” this sort of thing…

    2. Why aren’t ghd using DCMA take-down notices? Check out the results for “ugg” and you’ll see a similar situation, except that the ugg trademark holder is doing its best with DCMA notices (bottom of the first couple of pages).

    3. Isn’t time for Adwords to require one of the following: DUNS number, UK Company Number, VAT number, UTR – anything that verifies that the purchaser is legit?

    Hi David,
If you type in “GHD” into google this post is now number 7. Maybe you should start selling GHD’s.

Have been looking into buying some GDH’s as Xmas pressie for my teenage daughter and noticed that amazon advertise sponsored links at the bottom of their GDH sale page. When I clicked on these they were based in Hong Kong and were not approved by GHD!

It is a minefield. I am going to get mine from the official GHD site – pay slightly more I guess but at least I know they are real and most of all – SAFE!

The GHD Stylers are very popular in Denmark, and they can be bought on the internet aswell in saloons. The only thing that’s strange is the price. In Denmark we should pay around 1400 DKK for a styler and if you buy it from England you can get it for around 800 DKK including shipping. I know about fakes, but the sites I looked at isn’t fake sites – they are also listed at GHD Hairs official website.

@Christoffer – just had a look at the current exchange and at 1400 DKK, you are paying £172 – thats crazy, the RRP in a UK salon is £116.49. I wonder what the wholesale price is in Denmark. If they work on the same markup as they do in the UK, salons in Denmark would be better off order online from the UK rather than ghd direct.

@Gianni – the retailprice for the different products are. GHD Precious – 1599 DKK, GHD IV Styler+Mini+Salon 1399 DKK. GHD Pretty in Pink 1599 DKK.
You should be lucky to find a GHD Styler below 1250 DKK at any GHD approved online retailer websites in Denmark. We sell it for around 1238 DKK, but that’s also very cheap. We just had the new GHD Precious Gift Set, and it just sells great!

How can we trust any site that claims to be legitimate. Google should be doing something to police its own referrals, not just take the money and run, conspiring to deal in fraudulent items. If they don’t police their own self, then the fraud office should.

Maybe we are all to blame expecting the web to be a cheaper place to shop. Remeber the old adage “If it seems too good to be true, it probably is!”, or “Buyer beware”.

    Happy shopping.

I will from the highstreet where at least you have some comeback!

Can anyone confirm whether ghdlondonshop is selling fake ghds? A freind of mine has just bought a pair from them for £50 and think they were shipped from china which would automatically ring alarm bells for me, however she is convinced they are genuine as she has entered the no on the hologramed label on official ghd site and says they are genuine. I am not convinced can anyone advise? Gwen

Hi there. I was looking online for ghds for my girls for there christmas and got all excited when i googled them, they were going for around £50.00. Then i took a breath and remembered. I used to work in a salon as i am a hairdresser and they used to buy them in for more than that so there was no way they could make a profit! I then dug a little deaper and found the online web sight checker and used it, i even mailed some of the people selling the fake ones with a sob story hoping they would be honest with me. They claim they are made from the same place as ghds and are 100% authentic. If you go on to e bay they give u a good guid of how to spot fake ones even then u r still buying them. My point is it should not be allowed and am very glad i found this sight, it confirmed that these sights are fake and dangerous and could have caused my daughter a sad christmas…GOOGLE should be a shamed as after using many kinds of straighteners over the years there is no mistaking a ghd when u use one… Thanks again and u should definatly start seelling them.

Well looks like someone has done something about the fake ghds being sold online. UK Police and Trading Standards worked with Nominet to shut down more than 1200 websites selling fake ghds, ugg boots and other popular items.

We offer a repair service aimed at ghds and we’ve had to add a point to our terms to cover these fakes. The parts inside are terrible and our engineers spend on average twice as long trying to fix them.

The thing is doesn’t google simply aim to serve relevant results – and as such is it relevant that fake ones can be bought? Maybe the argument is that the end user and ghd should be combating these imposters. Would certainly make life easier for us if these fakes could be totally outlawed and yes they ca be dangerous
