Getting links from secondary locations
Everyone is always after that golden link from authority sites (we will call this authority site davidnaylor.co.uk for now).
These links tend to be the best to get as they’re from domains that Google trusts which gives your link more value, but these links are also the hardest to get and sometimes it can be an impossible task.
So what next? Give up and move on? No, there’s still value and links to be gained, Look at two things.
1. Where the site or page links to
You can try to follow the link power downstream to the next sites and look at getting links from there.
If davidnaylor.co.uk is linking to sites and individual pages then there’s a good chance that
A.These sites/pages have some importance
B These sites/pages are benefiting from the link power from being linked to from davidnaylor.co.uk.
This means that although there might not be as much value there still will be some in getting a link from this secondary location.
2. What links to the site.
If davidnaylor.co.uk is highly ranked as well as being an authority site then there’s a good chance its got some pretty powerful links from somewhere, try and work out which ones are passing the value and giving the site its rankings. Go after these links, work out why there linking to davidnaylor.co.uk and try and figure out how you can also get a link, if you can offer some form of (non payed) bait.
It can be a case of trial and error but these secondary links can be of huge value and should not be overlooked when link building especially for new sites.

http://www.devolved.co.ukOne of the first things I do when SEOing a site is check out the top 5 competitiors and their links.
As you say if they are up there then they probably have some high quality links, by getting the same links you may not rank above them but at least you negate their advantage.

http://www.becomeavonrepresentative.co.ukInteresting. I normally find the links by going to uk.yahoo.com and typing in link:sitegoeshere.co.uk but I am sure there must be other methods, can you let us know of any?

http://hubshout.comI agree. Working backwards from very powerful sites is a great idea. Worth your time for sure.

http://www.medical-specialists.co.ukThank you for highlighting this point. Most SEO experts already go through this path when they start with competitor’s web site analysis.

Somtimes the best way to get backlinks are the ones that seo companies say are the worst:- like directory links, check this out, search for blinds, roller blinds, venetian blinds ect on google, no1 will be blindsuk.net, check his backlinks, http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/uk/search?p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.blindsuk.net&bwm=i&bwmo=d&bwmf=u , there you will find no high quality links, just directory links and a bit of links manager. Also type in mattresses on google and bedstar.co.uk will be no1 with sitewide blog role links, and again no authority links, these methods always work, and your website will stay top on google through all updates.
