Flights to Chicago: Google Local spam

by

Google local can be a bit of an achilles heel for the search giant. Today, looking for flights to Chicago, Anthony came across this little number (cheers dude!)

spam spam spam spam spam spam spam...

Firstly, I want a cheap flight to Chicago so I’m not even sure why I’m seeing a map of Chicago. It doesn’t seem very relevant does it? Secondly, of those 3 results, 2 are highjacking the system.

The first listing, which displays as chicago-cheap-flights.info goes through some redirects to wind up at www.onetravel.com with a load of affiliate URL clutter that tells us this is somehow involved with Pepperjam – a US affiliate and internet marketing company. Onetravel is a flight aggregator site so at least has some legitimacy, but surely this is really abusing the system?

The second listing (cheapflightschicago.4u2se.com) redirects to cheapflights-4u.com which speaks for itself…

Now *that's* a quality result

Now *that's* a quality result

How do people spam Google local? Well the verification system is to take a phone call or a postcard and type in a code. The trouble being, of course that you can buy a local number and get it forwarded, just as you can get an ‘office’ that is a forwarding address. Given the increasing importance of localised results and the emphasis Google puts on them in blended search, it’s pretty clear that people are looking at this as a quick shortcut to the top of the rankings.

How can Google combat this kind of thing? It’s hard to say. In the UK at least, limited companies have registered premises and, of course, website ownership is generally tied to a identifiable person. Moving to some kind of system involving factors like that might put it all on a more legally-binding kind of footing, but in the meantime look out for more Google Local spam as people pick up on the possibilities.

Oh dear. If this change gets roled out on more queries, the UK travel industry’s going to have a nightmare!

While it looked like that some of the spam had been fought off . All kinds spam is returning again. Spammers are also taking nifty use of wikipedia as described by Mike Blumenthal here: http://blumenthals.com/blog/2009/12/07/google-maps-new-abuses-via-wikipedia-landing-pages/

And unfortunately, I think that due to the spamming, we will soon see Google clamp down on Local listings, which many smaller businesses rely on when it’s hard to compete with heavy brands.

You guys really are trying to find anything wrong with Google results, aren’t you?
Seems to me lately the majority of the “articles” have been complaints about Google in some way. Even though some (most?) of them are justified and should be looked into by Google.

Beany, we don’t ever try to find anything wrong with Google however we do use Google an awful lot more than the average person thus we find a lot more problems than the average user and by highlighting them we are helping a lot of people.

Its useful for other SEO’s to know exactly how people are spamming so they can prepare, protecting positions and clients from people trying to make a Quick Buck, like the guy who owns chicago-cheap-flights.info is trying to do.

I’m pretty sure (although I don’t know for a fact) that people from Googles Webspam team probably read here and around other SEO blogs in general… if something is wrong we are usually the first to highlight it.

I know Anthony and i appreciate the articles you guys write. It makes me laugh often for what results you’ve found and posted.
However i could not help but think that these kind of articles have been posted more often than before. But that might be just me.

In any case, my reaction was not meant as criticism. Think of it as just another reply from a happy reader, from The Netherlands this time.

awww before I read the reply from Beany I was gonna say “Well said Anthony”! Still applies of course.

I think it’s really important to work out how people are trying to spam the system so that legitimate SEOs can, on at least some level, protect themselves, and their customers.

I enjoy reading your posts about where Google is making mistakes, and I bet Google themselves (or rather the anti-spam team) welcome this kind of input.

Wonder if this changes in light of Google Places? Emphasis on customers reviews and the ability for Google to pull in lots more data to validate the business listing? Might help to weed out the less scrupulous companies?

Interesting post Paul. I recently saw the same sort of results when looking for London flights on Google.com.au in Australia. It came up with a few travel agents in London which was of no use to me. Maybe it is something they are just testing but does not seem good for relevancy. With more focus on places results within the main results Google will need to be careful the quality is maintained and it does not throw open too big opportunity for scammers!
