Could Firefox be the Downfall of Google

by

Could Mozilla or Firefox be the Downfall of Google ? I mean think if Firefox decides to use it’s own systems for stopping phishing, the data that Google so wants would be housed on Firefox servers and if those servers stored user information Firefox could offer you websites that your community matches. It would not take long for Firefox to work out what’s popular and what’s not.

Take Threadwatch, I read the same places Aaron does. Because we are in the same community there will be a small overlap of things I have found or Aaron has found in our travels. What if I could access the overlaps and other people over laps. Now if I could search those overlaps as well .. Hmmm I don’t need Google or Microsoft.

The way I see it at the moment, Google is beating Microsoft in my office.. WE ALL USE FIREFOX !! that’s our interface to the outside world .. ok we use the built in search box and that has Google, Yahoo and MSN, but if Firefox got rid of that and replaced it with it’s own SEARCH FUNCTION.. How much would that hurt Google and Yahoo.

It wasn’t so long ago that Google was bitching about IE7’s search box, I think that Firefox could really give Google a run for it’s money ..

That would be funny.. Mozearch : Community Search Project ..I could see this happening but how much money does Goog give Mozilla? On the other hand, now that all the Googler’s are rich, they can build MoZearch. Do you guys still use Windows in your office? XBox360? MSFT is still on the ball — This is good article to reminisce of the great MSFT : WINNER TAKE ALL from 1996 [from Philipp Lenssen]

I’ve no idea how big Mozilla are in terms of manpower. I know they have a lot of public backing but can they create a database for search?

I don’t think it’s possible for anyone to take on daddy G. I believe it’s locked in for them. They’re one of the greatest success stories ever. They are one big snowball running down a hill, getting bigger and bigger and bigger, acquiring new products and companies en route and growing internally. I don’t think they can be stopped! OK, I am going mad. I better stop now.

btard, you’re kidding, right? We pretty much all said the same thing about Altavista, then Yahoo. Nobody is going to take on those mammoths, yet now they don’t get nearly as much mention as Google. All it takes is one really good algo and some viral marketing to get another big player off the ground. Nothing is forever.

This isn’t about beating what’s out there at there own game, this speaks of something radically different and new; and I think quite brilliant.
A whole new search apparatus propagated by ‘human spiders.’
Similar to the ‘six degrees’ theory I can see this working very well in conjuction with traditional search engines and eventually surpassing them in terms of effectiveness.
This idea is seen primitively in blog and forum posts “hey check this out…”
Imagine being able to search through content browsed/spidered by people with a similar browsing history to you, I am sure there are utilazations beyond what we think of today as ‘search.’
Have you ever viewed Alexa data for a site and discovered something new based on the similar sites they offer at the bottom of the page?
Now, how are we going to implement this?

This is definitely an interesting idea, but I doubt it will happen with firefox. Firefox uses Google’s data to prevent phishing. Where Google rules is not so much search, but massively scaled distributed computing. Their cache, e-mail, rss reader, maps and many other services benefit from finely tuned computing power. I doubt mozilla has much interest in developing an infrastucture to cope with the problems that an in-browser search engine would present. I expect a more likely scenario to be Google expanding its webapps into a custom OS that merely requires a net connection. I’ll expand more on this in a future post on my site. It’s down right now but e-mail me if you’d like an update.
