Canon Photocopier
The problem with having an IT background especially when you have worked in a reselling environment is that it never quite leaves you alone.
My ears always start to twitch if someone starts a conversation in the pub about best deals on printers and computers, if I learnt one thing out of selling IT products it was that the profit margins are so very small and you have to offer a service second to none.
(Perhaps I should have kept this history quiet as Dave has tasked me with finding a new photocopier for the office. )
Why is it then that a task which should be so straight forward as purchasing a photocopier turns into an online frazzle, with as much clarity as a swimming pool in Majorca at the height of holiday season where the guests all mud wrestle.
Ok im looking for a Canon Photocopier and so type the search term ” canon photocopier” into Google, the first place I come to just doesn’t allow me to buy it? I’ve got the money here I’m ready to make a purchase, so how come all I can do is enquire?? I just want to buy the item…
Pretty poor, do Canon know about this?

I know its not an impulse buy for most people but when you know the photocopier you need and prepared to pay the price why can’t you just buy it? I don’t want to make a phone call, I don’t want to enquire just please let me buy it!
I guess its time to contact my reseller friends in the industry and have a scout round.

http://www.mrieck.comHi Dan,
My first post here but I’ve had the same problem when I started to look for a Canon copier. I don’t know why it has to be that way. I finally called the local office and got a great deal (actually a 30-40% discount) so don’t go for the first price they offer you.
We bought the IR3570 model and I can’t recommend it enough. works really well and the Scanner module is brilliant and fast.

http://www.jamiecarruthers.co.ukI used to be an IT buyer… I would hardly ever buy online, especially printers. Models go end of line every day.
Call an account manager, make him/her do some work for you, then get a discount on consumables and free delivery.

I work for Xerox in central London and could probably sort you out. However without knowing your requirements it would not be wise. Canon normally are cheap and thus their sales guys are just interested in flogging you a machine, even if it’s unsuitable.
The way I work is to find out how you currently work with your documents, way you may be able to improve this and then I make recommendations. Over time I build a relationsip with my clients and look after them. They then come back time and again, build a trust with me and are loyal. A lot of new business customers think they know what they need. Users think they want a specific product however when I explore options with them, we often come to the conclusion that what they want is actually inappropriate and not actually what they need or what is best for them.
This is why it’s not simply a matter of quoting a price. In my opinion if a photocopier/printer salesman just quotes you a price when you ask him for a model, you should walk away. All he is interested in is making a quick buck from you then telling you where to go when you have problems and you will have problems.
It’s comparable to walking into a car showroom that sells all models of cars and saying I want a cheap car that goes from a-b and would like it to be blue. I’ve seen a blue lada, it looked ok, can I have one of them. The salesman flogs you a blue banger for £5000 but it is rubbish, it’s a 2seater and your kids don’t fit in, it’s uncomfortable and drives like a mule, it always breaks down and is totally unreliable and within a few weeks you hate it and it doesn’t do what you want. you’ve wasted your money and end up going out and buying the car you should have bought in the first place from a nice chap who actually knows what he’s talking about and cares about solving your problems and satisfying your needs.
If however you went in and the nice chap asked what you’ll use it for, will you carry kids in it, have you plans for having kids, do you drive a lot on motorways or are you a backroads guy, do you like fast acceleration, is top end speed really all that important to you, what price is cheap for you (some guys think £500 is cheap, others think £500,000 is cheap) etc… he could then make a good recommendation on which car would be most suitable.
