Boiler scrappage scheme

by

What another Gimmick by the UK Government? If you are unaware, today the UK Government launches it £400 grants for Boiler scrappage,

But here is the thing, a new boiler will cost you £1750 – £2500 no small amount if you’re on a low income or just lost your job, but hey if you’re one of the lucky people that could afford a new boiler before the “Boiler scrappage scheme” was launched you’re good to order it now !.. and get a discount

IMO what the government should have done is looked at scaling the grants on household income, so that the people that need to save money on their heating bills ( the poor and the elderly !) could do this without having to find the extra £1500 ..

    Couldn’t disagree with you more.
Having a flat scheme means less onorous admin. Sure it helps those who could afford it and it also brings into play a lot of people who couldnt afford it who will then benefit from efficiency and lower bills over the following years. Sure it doesn’t help everybody but I guess it will help a lot. There is no cureall

The long term benefits of having a new boiler are huge, an old one can literally be burning money. Government policy should be about helping the most people possible and I think this kind of scheme is useful for that. I think some of the big boiler suppliers are also agreeing to match the government figure so the savings could be even more.

We have been told by a plumber the required new boilers to fit are brands Worcester and Vailant and these cost £800 more than the one he was going to fit, a Biasi, which is also ‘A’ rated. So it doesn’t look as though there is any saving.

British Gas are offering to match the Governments £400 if you have an installation from them. I’ve had quotes from two other very reputable boiler installers and low and behold British Gas is £1500 more AFTER taking their £400 off of thier quote !!!

My boiler needs replacing it qualifies for the scrappage scheme which I applied for two weeks ago. The application states that you should not go ahead and order the work to be done until you recieve your grant voucher. Fortunatly the boiler hasnt given up yet and we still have heating. I’ll let you know when.gov.uk gets around to releasing the cash.

Graham makes a good point, there is an interesting article from Money Saving Expert about the extra £400 “discount” large energy firms are offering: http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/news/utilities/2010/01/warning-over-boiler-scrappage-incentives

I reckon that the pay-back period for changing your boiler under the scrappage scheme is typically around 6-7 years based on the ususual cost of arounf £2,000 to £2,500 for the boiler and replacement work and maybe a £300-£400 saving on gas from the new boiler.

It’s a Helluva long wait, even with the scrappage scheme allowance. For a lot of folk a refurbishment of their existing central heating (boiler service, powerflush, add thermostatic radiator valves and turn down the room thermostat 1 degree, etc) could well produce the same annual savings at a fraction of the cost!

Vested interest declared – I’m a plumbing and heating engineer!

I think changing the boiler is only the beginning of saving money on heating bills. Ensuring that the heat settings are set properly and controls are correctly set will ensure more money is saved.

However, the scheme is definitely a positive thing in my opinion.
