BA Strike Dates Announced

by

With financial crisis and coalition government swirling around us all the back-to-the-seventies vibe is pretty strong. The Unite union in particular seems to be hell bent on bringing back massive mutton chops, sheepskin car coats and orange acrylic shirts.

Today, they’ve announced another series of strikes by British Airways cabin crew. Fair enough, they’ve got the right to hold industrial action but they can’t pretend to represent the common man when they’ve deliberately – and repeatedly – targeted bank holidays and half terms through May and June (May 18-22, May 24-28, May 30-June 3 and June 5-9 if you’re interested). Think of the families that will effect. Normal people looking forward to a break from the grind and some quality time together – let alone the business flights and attendant economic benefits they bring.

The rhetoric of solidarity with the man in the street has about the same validity as the mafia code of honour – it lasts as long as the tactical situation makes it useful. Anyway, if they intend to bring down the company that employs them in the time-honoured tradition that served the likes of British Leyland so well best of luck to them!

Less politically (and if you’re in SEO/marketing) if you’re looking to head to SMX Advanced in Seattle and you’ve got tickets through BA and are looking for a replacement, BMI are holding sale prices till tomorrow.

    > orange acrylic shirts.

What is wrong with that? :)

On a more serious note … do I hear you right – that BA will strike on may 18? …Argh, I am flying home on that day from SMX Advanced London. Not with BA though but its out of Heathrow so I guess my SAS flight could be affected too?

I couldn’t agree with you more. Will BMI flights to the US be affected?

Not only SMX Seattle is affected, but also the SMX Advanced in London conference attendees might have trouble getting home afterwards.

Of course, we could have another volcanic eruption and that would make the strike rather pointless :)

That’s right, why should workers have the right to protest against ridiculous working practices and terrible mistreatment using the only real power they have when the management won’t negotiate?

Is your surname actually Thatcher? Erosion of social justice and fairness to the majority in favour of the interests of the financially fortunate few should be left in history just like your orange acrylic shirt. If you would rather return to the early 80s than the 70s, you are quite welcome my friend, but if you try to drag me back there with you I will fight you in the streets.

@Ian: I didn’t know that BA workers were made to work in chains in the torching sun or biting snow storms without water and food 24/7 without break?!

@Ian – despite spending some time trying to find out what the “ridiculous working practices and terrible mistreatment” actually are, I can’t (and I’ve downloaded a pdf sonorously called “The Truth” from the Unite website).

So far as I can tell, there is opposition to job cuts and pay cuts – but that holds true everywhere at the moment, from Government to private enterprise. It’s a bitter pill that a lot of people are having to swallow (and one I’ve experienced twice myself in the past).

All the strike is doing is losing BA customers (I won’t be booking with them) and harming people who have absolutely nothing to do with the dispute other than the fact that ultimately they pay the wages of the people going on strike.

If you think that is a recipe for a glorious future for BA employees then… good luck with it!

This will only serve to harm BA more. And it is a terrible thing for because of the disruption it will cause.
Everyone is having to suffer to some degree.
