Aww, Good ol’ Google!

by

I know we complain sometimes when things aren’t ranking where they should be, and we get junk for our search results… and some other stuff…

But Google’s claims to be an over-all ethcial company still hold true (they’re angels in comparison to other corporations anywhere near the size). Look at just the last few days:

1. Google are helping us in the UK out by building a huge technology community centre in London. This will help with jobs, training, and of course the over-all economy.

2. Google are offering to give $75 Million for a solar electricity project on peoples houses, helping to build a more sustainable future.

3. Google have put the 2,400 year old Dead Sea Scrolls online for all to see. Great for historic and cultural reasons.

4. An ex-director at Google (who is obviously still a shareholder and is very wealthy from it) wants his and other very wealthy people’s taxes raised! I know this isn’t Google itself but it kind of goes to show that he’s not greedy and can see that some of his vast sums of money would be better spent elsewhere… a sentiment Google claims itself holds.

5. Google want to replace existing broadband infrastructure to provide people with faster broadband, and to make it for FREE!

6. Google has provided free access and mapping technology, working through Google Earth Outreach Program for a few years now, but just this week a couple of Canadian activist groups will be able to release their data in order to help save forestry and wildlife.

7. Google has just exposed its carbon footprint (showing that they’re carbon neutral) and prompted calls for other corporations to act the same.

Sure they’ll make mistakes, but Google’s heart is in the right place really… don’t you think?!

Their heart is in the right place? Well of course as long as that place is where i want it to be..or you want it to be…its all personal interest at the end of the day.

All the points above are valid and worthy of praise. But it is still a very small percentage of the large profits which they make and this is probably best judged with hindsight sometime in the future :-)

All sounds good to me, would be nice to see a similar thing in other areas, Nottingham for one :-)

It would be nice to see more done outside of London as they’re are companies nationwide that could do with the support.

The thought of Free Google Broadband is also a big win for us :-) I really hope that materialises.

Google should in fact have a big say on what the Government do, lets be honest, it would help :-)

They’ve actually given out far more than that though Colin, over $800m on solar power stuff, who knows how much to charity, and that’s just in terms of money… not counting time spent on projects and fundraising, etc… I think the point is that they don’t have to do it, nobody is forcing them and all that cash could go into the shreholders pockets. It’s a good example to set for some other companies that just don’t care about anything but profits.

Thanks for posting this article its very interesting and great to see Google doing offline things. I remember seeing a green food faire they did in the US and it looked amazing. The tech centre in the UK can only be a good thing. I never heard of Microsoft or any other large company doing this.

Actually to be fair to Microsoft here, they give loads to charity… Bill Gates does and gives incredible amounts. I “think” he’s a humanist actually so I guess that would be expected.

Reminds me of Ian Drury song

    I believe in bottle banks
    And beauty from within
    I believe in saying thanks
And fresh air on the skin

    I believe in healthy walks
    As tonic for the feet
    I believe in serious talks
    And just enough to eat

    That’s what I believe
    Although it seems naïve
    I believe in Santa Claus
    To give is to receive
    That’s what I believe

    I believe in ‘Bob-a-Job’
    And life in outer space
    I believe an open gob
    Does nothing for your face

    I believe in being nice
In spite of what you think
    I believe in good advice
And not too much to drink

    That’s what I believe
    (laughs) Surprising as it seems
    I believe that happiness
    Is well within our dreams

    That’s what I believe
    Although it seems naïve
I believe that peace and love
    Are there to be achieved

    I believe in being fair
St. Pancras station from the air
    I believe in taking care
    Moonshine sparkles in your hair

    I believe in being true
In everything you try to do
I believe in me and you
And I hope you share my point of view

    I believe in being kind
    Especially when it’s hard
    I believe an open mind
    Can show a fine regard

    I believe that manners make
    A person good to know
    I believe in birthday cake
    And going with the flow

    That’s what I believe
As strange as it may be
    I believe this attitude
    Is good enough for me

    That’s what I believe
    Although it seems naïve
    I believe it simplifies
    The tangled web we weave

    That’s what I believe

Yes it is nice that the big G does these things but what they do in the bigger picture ie market control ect does not stop, where did they get that money to pay for all these nice gifts people are bought very cheaply ,and i am not trying to be mean to Google but power and money really do change even the best people.

    No, I don’t agree.

All of the things you mentioned about Google are not search related and while all those other projects are FANTASTIC of any company… this is SEO and Google is search.

From a search standpoint Google is attempting to force websites to become their idea of what the internet should be instead of sticking to ranking what it is. That’s a HUGE conflict of interest imo. regardless of what I think Google must also please wall st and will always continue to bend search results to profit themselves… they own an ad agency after all… and so no, Google is FAR from being what Google (search) needs to be to maintain a healthy internet.

Right now Google’s pushing big brands HARD but what they USED to do well was show cool sites that would otherwise not be found. If you want big brands pick up the yellow pages, ya know?

300 changes a year? That’s a fancy way of saying they got it wrong 299 times this year.

I’ve heard people say similar but I haven’t found it to be true. Larger companies just have larger websites with more content due to having larger budgets and more products, which is why they show up a lot in search… plus they hire SEO’s and solicit links through social media and offline advertising. It’s not an actual bias. If they were only on the side of large brands they wouldn’t have penalized JC Penny so hard.

Also with the 300 changes per year, it’s not really a case of getting it wrong 299 times, it’s evolution of the algorithm… it’s not like it’s possible to get it perfect straight away, and they have to make changes to combat people gaming the system. Sure they get some stuff wrong but any company does, it’s human error.

Do not agree. In über-management-speak, it’s simply called “enlightened self-interest”.

Public facing initiatives including those you have mentioned are given a high profile by Google, masking many other activities (a far longer list, btw) that are not anywhere near as ethical.

I take it back… Google removing keywords from being shown in Analytics when people are logged in is a bad move and is just them trying to screw us over!
