Google Webmaster Tools smoke n mirrors

It’s not often I get so pissed off that I throw something, but I’m getting close…

I’m helping a very very small company with SEO, and we I ranked them top 10 for most of the keyword set But in the .com, they are an English company on a UK IP, but the Domain is a .com at a recent Search Conference one of the owners asked a Google Rep, about this issue and they said that’s easy sign up or get your SEO to sign up to Webmaster tools in Google and you can tell Google that your a UK based company..

so we did that flicked the flag to UK and it didn’t make a blind bit of difference, know I have the issue that the client beliefs that Google wouldn’t lie to him so it most be something I have done…

UK geo target

what do you do … me I just show the clients what happened when a Google Adwords Rep said they could do a better job than me, Google had the account for 5 months before the client came back due to falling conversions and rising costs.

What do you do when Google’s advice is just doesn’t help ?

See a webpage like a SEO

Ok the first thing I always check is server headers, a common mistake is 302ing the home page to an internal page so here is the screen shot of what a server header should look like :

server header

the next thing is Links and ratio of inbound to outbound links something like :

link ratio

I can see that I have too many internal links, I still like the 100 links on a page rule, so that means I need to do some culling, most probably in my NAV .. any way externals links is next on my list. What is the web master allowing to be followed is normally a good indication if a site is selling links, if a high % of outbounds are a Nofollow and a few and clean links, IMO the clean links are either owned by the web master or are purchased .. Blog’s can be a little different you can see mine here :

extenal NO-Follow links

that’s my Comments with NoFollow, and my posts Have clean links, I can also see MY V10 tracking script, My Flickr account and my Firewall Script here :
external follow links

I can also see that I have a few Sphinn links due to the fact that I pull in their RSS, but again I’m happy that Danny and his Mods will keep that feed clean but it’s a good reminder that I’m linking externally !!

btw The Tool is Here

Google unveils new prototype image search system “VisualRank”

Google has revealed a new page ranking system for images called VisualRank. The biggest search engine in the world today uses PageRank and this determines a websites value, based on its content and is scored from 0-10. The higher the websites PageRank, the higher the site appears on Google’s listings for the related keyword if all things where equal, title, h1 number of page etc etc…

It is different with images, as rankings largely rely on analysing the text near the image, the images file name and the ALT text associated with the image. Whilst progress has been made in the field of face detection for images, other more traditional objects like stereos and food items remain largely untouched.

VisualRank works using image recognition software, which groups images together that seem most similar to each other. It then estimates “visual hyperlinks” which in turn produces a final ranking.

Google have said that they concentrated on 2000 of the most popular search queries to make the prototype, including iPods, Xbox and Ps3. It then sorted the top 10 images from both its PageRank system and from Google Image search results, after that they created a scoring system for an images relevance. Researchers have estimated an 83% drop in irrelevant images returned by the search system.
