ASK.COM Update
Google still leads the way in search, or does it? Its seems lately that other search engines are trying their level best to be innovative in their developments. Ask.com has had a major rebuild and promises to deliver faster results to certain queries. Data will be pulled from a variety of different online sources including question and answer sites like WikiAnswers.
The update is noteable if only by what this search engine is prepared to index. The engine is prepared to focus on content coming from individuals rather than professional publishers and personally I think this move has been coming for some time across the board too.

The trouble with pulling data from sources like WikiAnswers is reliability. Every time I’ve been on WikiAnswers I’ve found the information to be either incorrect or very general. Mostly it’s been written by them any way and so isn’t even user generated. Having such low quality information sourced in my SERPs on anything but the most long tail of search’s would defiantly put me off. Not to mention that everyone knows just how easy it is to game engines such as Ask. Their index is very easily spammed and giving higher priority to content coming from individuals instead of established and trusted sources is only going to exasperate that problem.

http://www.seoboo.co.ukThe problem that Ask are facing at the moment is that (based loosely on something written by Claude Hopkins from ‘The Science of Advertising’)… To merely step up to the plate is no longer enough. Google has a massively strong presence in the search market and is a household name. People are ‘used’ to using Google now. To entice someone from what they know and are comfortable with, you have to give them a reason, and it has to be a good one. Ask need to really pull it out of the bag and offer something fantastic to win searchers back from Google now.

http://www.boxcarstudio.comNeilzb is right. Google has a strong hold on the current search engine market, they’ve even managed to make their name an everyday term as in “I googled him”. Until these other search engines come up with something new and innovative, rather than just trying to be faster than Google, they won’t stand out.

I am liking the stuff that SearchMe are doing.
I wasn’t aware of them until a month or so ago.

There’s more than one search engine out there.
