A Weird Thing For Google To Say
While playing with the Chrome ‘dev channel’ and installing an extension we got a bit of a weird warning.
Strange way for Google to word it, don’t you think?
Tried it again and got a different message! I wonder how many there are.
Edited to add – looks like there’s only three of them at the moment – found in the source code:
<message name="IDS_EXTENSION_PROMPT_WARNING_1" desc="Humorous warning displayed in the extension install prompt that tells users that extensions have access to their computer and private data.">
Extensions have access your computer and private data. This means they could forward all your email to your spouse.
</message>
<message name="IDS_EXTENSION_PROMPT_WARNING_2" desc="Humorous warning displayed in the extension install prompt that tells users that extensions have access to their computer and private data.">
Extensions have access your computer and private data. They could send tweets or email on your behalf.
</message>
<message name="IDS_EXTENSION_PROMPT_WARNING_3" desc="Humorous warning displayed in the extension install prompt that tells users that extensions have access to their computer and private data.">
Extensions can access your computer and private data. They could post unflattering pictures to your Wall.

http://www.jmedwards.netI presume that they change the wording so it sinks in (even if a little) each time it comes up. People are more likely to pay attention to repetitive behaviour if something changes between each repetition

http://www.mcskelly.comSeems a bit like the warnings on cigarette packets – don’t just tell them it’s bad, give ‘em specifics!

I guess its a way of getting people to pay attention to the message – if its worded differently to the average warning message then its less likely to be ignored?

http://blog.managers.org.ukIt’s clearly designed to be a bit quirky but I’d imagine many people, especially less experienced web users, would see that and run a mile. Although I guess being on the dev channel you won’t find many novices. Still, it’s not really a topic that suits such a jokey nature.

http://www.ketchup-mayo-senf.dea warning which changes in wording gets always more intention than a not changing warning.
its an good idea and i like it
